The Lure of Unattainable Men

Greetings to those who lust!

Let me tell you a secret: I’ve always been a little boy crazy.

It began early. In school, I had a new crush every week. As a result, I had my little heart broken every week, too. For me, high school was often a lonely place. Don’t get me wrong: I had some wonderful girlfriends, but the boys I cared about didn’t know I existed.

One of my best friends used to tell me boys were intimidated by me because I was one of the smart girls. That was no consolation on those dateless nights. I used to moan a bit to my mom, who would get frustrated because she didn’t know how to make me feel better about myself. One day, she exclaimed, “Rosanna, why do you persist in chasing unattainable men?”

And she was right. Invariably, the boys I had crushes on were the high school superstars: the jocks, the rebels, the cool kids. The ones who didn’t see the quiet brunette with a mouth full of braces. I don’t think my mom meant to imply that I was unworthy of those guys; just that I always fell for the ones who were taken or too troubled to care.

I did have a few boyfriends, of course. Nice boys who were very sweet to me. However, it was the aloof, gorgeous ones who lingered in my heart, long after they brushed me off. We never quite forget the ones who break our hearts, after all.

So, what did I do with this experience? I BEGAN WRITING!

Writing romance gave me an outlet in which I could pair those perfect men with some flawed women. The shy teen in me has been able to live vicariously through my books. There’s nothing I love more now that to create a wonderful, imperfect heroine and see her curl the toes off a man who looks as if he should be dating supermodels. My heroines are nothing like supermodels. They make mistakes. They speak their minds. They are often big, old nerds.

And the nerd in me is so happy to have a bit of literary vindication.

My first paranormal romance For the Love of a God features a heroine who is pleasantly dorky, awkward and unashamed to be so. However, when her new boss turns out to be the deliciously-hot Greek god of love, her ordered world turns upside down.

If you like reading about a nerdy girl who makes good, I hope you’ll check it out.

Blurb:

Conservator Maia Douglas is an expert on ancient Greece and its mythology. She would never tell anyone at the museum where she works, but she’s always had a secret crush on the mythical Eryx, Greek god of love. There is nothing she loves more than to tend to her favorite statue of him, and her nighttime dreams are filled with luscious images of Eryx making love to her.
One day, the peace at Maia’s beloved museum is shattered when a new director arrives. A man who looks exactly like her image of Eryx. As Maia watches, he manages to upset her ordered museum world, at the same time he inflames her with unwanted desire.
Maia does not know that her new boss is actually the god Eryx, disguised as a mortal so he may work in antiquities. Although he is the god of love, he has forsaken his sexual nature because of a curse that has killed any woman he’s dared to love. Though he fights it, Eryx is drawn to Maia with a force he’s never experienced in a thousand years. But can he convince her of his true identity? And can he protect her from a vengeful goddess who seeks her destruction?
Review from Night Owl Reviews:
“Rosanna Leo breathes life into a fantastic myth and makes it so believable you cannot help but be swept away….I love the rollercoaster of emotions this story had me on, from laughter to tears of joy and sorrow. I am a complete sucker for a great mythology based plotline and this one was fun. This is a great by the pool read.
Warning: You might get caught up in all the fantasy!”

  2. Oy, do I relate to that post! Uh, yeah. I was a “smart” girl also. I wasn’t a soc, a hood, or a jock (it was the 60s). Of course, I had a lot of male friends since they needed me to make it through chemistry lab without blowing up the school. Then I went to Purdue, in science, and was the only girl in many of my classes. The odds were on my side and the guys liked smart girls. I married one of those guys in my Junior year. 🙂 Though I do still wonder about my first real crush — wonder if he regrets passing me up? LMAO. Hugs, Rosanna. Great post.

    • I had a couple crushes, but I always like the sweet, guy next door types. I grew up around boys (but not a tomboy by any means), so I was always friends with the baseball team and my gal pals would be so jealous of me. I didn’t go on an official date (other than prom where I just took my good guy friends) until I was twenty-eight and that was with the man who is now my husband. So I never put myself out there for dudes, but I learned later that they all crushed on me despite my chubbiness, coke bottle glasses, and red hair and freckles. (I was a GOOD looking high school girl, lemme tell ya!) So I was just too busy reading to care for any of the guys unless they were an English duke or viscount. I have a thing for viscounts to this day!

  3. I crushed, too. And I couldn’t get a date in high school to save my life. Oh well…I’m glad those days are over. Love the nerdy girls, the ones who prevail. Hehehe Hugs to you, Rosanna! Have a very Merry Christmas and totally mythic New Year!
