Ooooh! Cover Reveal! by Emilia Manicni

Whew! I am one tired writer!

seducingkate-510 (1)Today I am wrapping up the blog tour for Seducing Kate with sweet Jianne.  If you haven’t stopped by, hop on over and get your chance to win a sexy Silk Rope Set including a blindfold to go along with Seducing Kate (yes, I know it’s hard to read when you are tied up and blindfolded, but perhaps your lover can read it to you). I’ve been all over the place the last week and a half pimping out Kate and the bondage set. If you missed it, swing by any of my stops listed on my blog! I’m pulling all the comments tomorrow and offering up a winner of the set and a book, and giving away another copy of Seducing Kate.

I also got tossed edits for my alter ego Marci Boudreaux’s upcoming March release. This is short story, a quickie if you will. But it’s also a sweeter romance, I used up all my sexual energy on Kate..seriously, that woman likes to…you know.

Anyway, I’ve been nipple deep in promotions and edits, but I’m loving every moment of it. And because the readers here at Love, Lust, and Laptops are the absolute best, I thought I’d give you a sneak peak at the cover for Forever Yours, scheduled for release March 14 from Musa Publishing.

Again, this is a sweeter romance. Sure, there’s sex—I did write it, after all—but it’s done with a bit of a nicer vibe (am I the only one who giggled at that?).

Forever Yours is part of Musa’s Finally Ever After Series, which are shorter stories that reunite couples and give them a second chance at happiness. Because they are designed to be “lunch reads,” they have a strict limit on the maximum word count. I confess, that wasn’t the easiest thing for me. I’m a bit long-winded.

But it was fun and I think, even though it is just 18K, the story is strong and doesn’t leave the reader feeling like they got shorted.

We catch up with Meg just as she runs into her former lover, John, when he returns to town after four years after leaving her. He’s repentant, she’s furious. But John is Meg’s brother-in-law’s best friend and she finds that there is no escaping him. Can he convince her to give him another chance? And if she does, will he hurt her again?

Okay, enough stalling…without further ado (imagine a drumroll here)…Forever Yours cover reveal….

Bah-da-bum! Pretty isn’t it? I like it. It’s soft and sweet and perfect for a Finally Ever After book. Now, back to editing so I can get this book done and ready to share with you!

When All Else Fails … Blame the Weather by Monette Michaels

snow treesYes, I have no topic.

Unlike my Thursday buddy, Cherie, I am not sick and feel fine.  I just have absolutely nothing important, new, exciting, or even titillating to share. I can’t think of ten things anyone would want to know about me.

My mind is a blank.

For this lack of brain function, I blame the polar vortex and all the Alberta Clippers training across my part of the country — Indiana aka Alaska of the Midwest.

One day a couple of weeks ago, our low temp equalled that of the landing area on Mars where the Mars Rover had  set down.  Chalk Mars off for colonization.

We’ve set snow records in Indianapolis for January and the month isn’t even over yet.  Oy! Still can’t touch the Blizzard of 78, though. That year the snow, though measuring less, came over a shorter span of time and caused a bigger mess. Cross-country skiing and snow-mobiling were the only ways to get around, and that was on I-465, one of the major connectors in this part of the U.S.

Of course, things could be worse. I could live in Hotlanta where snow and ice are rara ava, so when ice and below freezing temps hit, chaos ensues.  I sat in awe as The Weather Channel showed the images of parking lots aka federal highways, in and out of Atlanta.  Talk about gridlock. And the stories of stranded motorists leaving their mostly likely gas-less cars and spending the night in Home Depots and grocery stores were both fascinating and sad.  BTW, I’d opt for the grocery store, at least there’s food there.

Can’t wait to see what February 2014 has in store.

January and February are normally Indiana’s coldest and snowiest months.  Who knows?  Maybe February will be the warmest and wettest in the form of rain month on record.  I’ll be sure to stay tuned to the Weather Channel.

Luckily I could see the pictures of Atlanta’s weather woes and computer depictions of the polar vortex and Alberta Clippers since I do not have Direct TV.  I have Comcast and it knows where it’s bread is buttered in the Midwest. The Weather Channel is an essential part of  my daily life since we in Indiana get tornadoes, gustinadoes, blizzards, and floods.  Pestilence and plague are probably not far behind.

BTW Coast Guard Alaska and Highway Thru Hell are two of my favorite shows on TWC, as we weather groupies call it.

So, how’s your weather?  Um, if you are on a beach, getting a tan, and drinking fruity drinks with little umbrellas, don’t gloat — it’s rude.

Home sick

I am home sick and I know today is my day to blog…but I am ill so this is what you get instead…..

10 things you didn’t know about me.

1) I am the youngest of 5 kids….and yes that does make me a spoilt brat

2) I have 3 nieces, 5 nephews, 5 Great nieces, 1 Great nephew and a God daughter (yes Christmas is expensive)

3) The author who influenced me the most is probably Shelly Laurenston, she taught me that you can have comic moments in romance.

4) I hate the dark

5) When I was in senior school (high school) my english teacher told my mum that if I read more my spelling would be improved. She told the teacher that if I read anymore I’d never leave my room. I still can’t spell and my grammar sucks!

6) I love cheese, any cheese…give me all the cheese!!!

7) I have collected over 200 thimbles……it’s an addiction, what can I say.

8) I’m a fan of mixed martial arts fighting….

9) I love shifters……most any shifters…..but my heart will always be with wolves though.

10) when I am sick… brain goes on holiday….can you tell??

Sorry guys, next time….honest I will try to give you a much more exciting post…probably….Now where are those tissues…..

Making the move from PNR to CR

It’s been an interesting couple of weeks for me.

Not only have I been able to enjoy the launch of another paranormal romance, Predator’s Refuge, I have had the opportunity to begin a new manuscript. However, this one is different than anything I’ve attempted in a long time.

Those who’ve read me know I pretty much dwell in the paranormal world as far as my writing goes. However, I truly believe one needs to constantly stretch oneself and try new things. It’s been a few years since I wrote contemporary romance, and my only published CR to date is Up In Flames (my firefighter romance). I decided a while back that I needed to spend some time in the contemporary world. Thus, the new WIP.

It’s going well so far but I’ve definitely noticed some differences in the way one has to write in this genre. After all, problems cannot be solved by using paranormal bells and whistles. As fun as it is to give your hero/heroine the ability to fly or shift shapes or drink blood, a writer has to ensure she is not using these traits as crutches. When talking about real people, the solutions to their problems must also be real, and this isn’t always the most exciting alternative.

Then there’s the fact that I worry my very human hero will not be as appealing as my supernatural heroes are. My fans have loved previous heroes’ special abilities and powers. So how do I make a mortal hero seem just as appealing? I think it all comes down to human emotion. This is what will make my new hero likable. But will it make him unique? Probably not. After all, real men are out there everywhere.

I am hoping the conflict in the story will be the unique aspect. I am attempting a romance between two people who should pretty much hate each other, based on their circumstances. It will be my job to whittle away their defenses and help them love each other. Oh, and hopefully have some smokin’ hot sex along the way! Can’t forget that.

So stay tuned, and I’ll keep you updated on how it’s going. This new work is a very personal one for me, one that summons up old memories and aches. I am writing from experience here, folks, and baring myself in this work. It might be difficult for me to get it all down on paper, but I have a feeling finishing this one will be the most rewarding writing experience I’ve ever had. And I’m so glad you’re here to share it with me.

The state of things–and an excerpt from my WIP!

So, it’s pretty cold here in Georgia right now. Cold enough that Becca and I haven’t been making our morning jogs, which has left me plenty of time to do writerly things.

Like edits for High and Tight, my contemporary M/M romance coming out in May from Carina Press. Those were finalized last week, and let me tell you, I am thrilled with how they turned out. I am so excited for this book release!

And writing. Lots of time for writing.

I wrote a steampunk short on Goodreads called “Pistoned,” a 2000-word vignette dashed off as a gift for a Goodreads friend. If you’re over 18 and logged into Goodreads, you can find it here:

Pistoned by Vanessa North on Goodreads

Right now I have three projects actively going: the sequel to High and Tight, a romcom shifter parody with a gay octopus shifter, and the kinky sequel to “Double-Up.” (yeah, you’ll hear more about that one later–it’s out on submission now)

I’m in the home stretch on the tentacle book though, so I thought I’d share a little bit of it here. Quickie disclaimer: this excerpt is from an unedited work in progress. It could change or even disappear from the final version. I’m sharing it here in the spirit of fun, so don’t read too much into it, okay?

From Tentacular Spectacular:

I’m pretty sure Simon–Six–vibrates at a different frequency than the rest of the planet. When we step out of the restaurant and into the storm, his eyes get huge and he flashes me this insane grin. He runs right out into the middle of the boardwalk, arms flung wide and head back. The rain splashes down around him and lightning flashes off in the distance.

Between the bright red neon of Dick’s sign and the bright flashes of lighting, he’s lit up like a Christmas tree.

“C’mon No-aahhhh! The water’s great!” He shouts. His clothes are soaked, shiny and clingy and his mop of wild blond hair sends rivulets of water running down the side of his face. He’s drinking in the storm with unabashed glee, laughing into the wind and turning in circles to take it all in.

I want him.

Lust surges over me like the storm, and I’m running from the shelter of Dick’s awning to join Six in his wild weather-worship.

“Hell yeah!” he shouts, flinging his arms around me when I reach him.

I wrap my own arms around his waist and drag him tight to my body. I take his laugh into my mouth when I kiss him.

His lips are soft, and the shudder that goes through his body is hard. He groans into my mouth and kisses me back, sliding his arms up and down my back just as his tongue steals out to meet mine. I taste him, rainwater, vinegar. I taste electricity and longing. I shudder under the weight of the urge to shift so that I can taste him with my tentacles too.

He breaks the kiss and buries his face in my throat, murmuring something into the skin there. It sounds like “Oh my god, my god.”

I grip his wet hair in one palm and tilt his head back so I can kiss him again, this time sweet and slow. I’m so aroused, aching hard. When he starts to grind against me, it feels so good I could come right then and there. Instead, I slide a hand down to his ass and knead it, rocking our bodies together.

“We can’t—” he pulls away from the kiss, gasping. He gestures around us to the deserted boardwalk. “I think we need to go somewhere private. My house?”

Except I can’t. I’m not ready to tell him what I am, and what if I shift during sex? It’s happened before, which is why I’ve only ever slept with guys like me, or the locals back home who know about us and have a kink for it.

“I can’t, Simon.” I shudder. “I really want to, don’t get me wrong, but I’m not prepared…”

“Dude, I’ve got condoms, lube, whatever we need.”

“No, I mean, I’m not ready.” I sigh. “I want to. But I need to go slow. Okay?”

He groans and grinds his erection into me one more time. “No fucking on the first date? Gawd, Noah.”

I laugh. “Does it make you feel any better that I’m pissed at myself for it too?”

“Yeah, a little bit.” He smiles, closing his eyes and tilting his face up to the rain again. Then his head snaps back down and he looks me dead in the eye. “Actually, no. It’s confusing. You’re sending me mixed signals. You kissed me. We like each other, we just had a great date, and now I want to get off and you do too, and we can’t do it together because why? I mean, come on. I promise I’ll still respect you in the morning.”

“I just need a little time.” I rub a thumb over his bottom lip. “Can you give me that?”

He shakes his head. “I knew this was gonna happen. I embarrass you and you’re trying to duck out of this nicely, and then you’ll never want to see me again and goddamn I’m never gonna get laid.”

For a second, I’m horrified that he really thinks I’m trying to ditch him because I’m embarrassed, but then he laughs and winks at me. “I’m kidding.” He steps away from me and adjusts his jeans, giving himself a good squeeze while he’s at it—as much for my benefit as anything else I’m sure. “It’ll keep. But I am so gonna think about you when I jerk off tonight.”

“Me too. I mean, about you.” I swipe rainwater from my face.

“I am so going to do such dirty things to you in my imagination, you’ll wake up feeling them.” He grins at me. “Totally defiling you with my brain right now. It’s good, No-aaaaahhhhh. So fucking good.” He bites his lip and groans.

“Please stop that.”

“Unnh. Oh, shit man, that’s so hot, just uh…Oh, yeah, like that. Right there—oh.” He shudders a little, then whimpers, “Noaahh.”

“You are such a pervert.” I chuckle.

He opens his eyes and winks at me. “You like it.”

I do. I nod. “Yeah. I like you.”

“Which is why you won’t sleep with me?” He arches an eyebrow.

“Yeah.” Well, part of it. But secrets. “I don’t want to fuck it up with you.”

“Okay, God.” He rolls his eyes and smiles. “I suppose waiting for you is better than blowing some random who loses my digits the next day.”

He’s trying to look nonchalant, but I can see the hurt in his face when he says it.

“I’m not going to lose your digits. I’m not that guy.”

He nods. “I know.”

“I’ll call you tomorrow.” I promise.

“Yeah?” He looks up, a grin spreading on his face. “Dude, we should go surfing.”

Oh, fuck me.

Well, there you have it. Six and Noah’s first kiss. I hope you all enjoyed!

What’s Happening?

Hi! I’ve been so busy. I’m immersed in BDSM these days. The first book of my BDSM series is done done done. It’s called Bound to be Taken. The second one just dragged me through harrowing edits! Bless my editor for her insight and patience! Without her it wouldn’t be half as good. She yanked me way out of my comfort zone this week and I pulled a new ending out of my soul that left me wrung out. It’s awesome and I love it even more now. That one is called Bound to be Tamed.

So now I’m moving into the third book in that series while it’s fresh in my mind. And talk about comfort zone! It’s my first F/F/M! Don’t get squeamish. If you aren’t a fan of F/F, you will still like this! I have it on good authority. 😉 So for the next several weeks I’ll be working my way through this third Emergence book. The first two were long. I’m expecting something similar. 90k ish.

In December I wrote an entirely separate BDSM. Not sure where it will land or when, but I’ll keep you posted. It’s working it’s way through submissions.

Wolves? Oh, yes those guys! Hehe. I’ll be back in the land of wolves next month. The fourth book in the Wolf Gathering series is done. I’ll have the cover soon and toss it out there for everyone to see! I’ll dig my hands into the fifth book next. It’s in my head. It just needs an opportunity to leak out my fingers. If only there were more hours in a day. The sixth is hanging out in my head too, darn it! All these voices and howling keep me up at night!

If you missed the cover of Wolf Gatherings: Completed (Book 3), I’ll add it here. It releases in just a few weeks! YIKES! February 6th. The covers for this series are smokin’ hot. I adore them! Thanks, Taliesin publishing!

So that’s my life in a nutshell. 😉 Back to the work in progress…

Beginning 2014 With a Bang!

VengeanceHammer_ByJianneCarlo-453x680In the first three weeks of 2014, two of my books, That logo - nowl top pickPearly Drop, Murphy’s Laws of Time Travel #1, and Death Blow, Vengeance Warriors #2, were awarded TOP PICKs by Night Owl Reviews.

My fellow LLL author and buddy, Cherie Nichols, emailed me late last week with the news that Vengeance Hammer, Vengeance Warriors #3, has been nominated for LR Cafe’s  for the ‘Best Historical of 2013’ Award. Humdinger!

I’m tickled pink because Death Blow, the second book in the series, won Passionate Plume’s Best Historical of 2013. Wow, what are the odds of two books in the series being honored? I keep pinching myself.

And the reviews – OMG. The one for Pearly (my nickname for the book)by Hitherandthee kept me grinning all day. Here’s how it begins:

Woohoo! What a fun and outrageous book! I just finished reading That Pearly Drop by Jianne Carlo, and I loved every second of this novel.

I like 2014!

As you can probably guessing, it’s a happy Monday for me, and I hope yours is too!

New Release and Alpha Men (and sex toys)

The Alpha Male, for me anyway, is a tricky beast. I like strong, take-charge men. But I like them to still be sensitive to their woman. I don’t want a man pushing me around, acting like a jerk, and I certainly don’t want to read about men like that.

I want them to be protective and maybe a little tough, refusing to take crap from their lady. I want them to be dominant without being bossy. (Is that possible? In my mind it is.)

Some of the books I’ve read, I feel like the author has taken the “angry, betrayed alpha” too far and turned him into a borderline abusive asshat. Sorry, but that is NOT sexy.

Even in erotica with a strong Dom/Sub relationship, it should be about respect.

My latest book Seducing Kate delves a bit into creating a dominate personality.

Kyle is a young man, just about to graduate college when he falls in lust with his roommate’s mother Kate. Kate has a bad habit of dating the worst kind of man she can find. Soon enough, though, the reasoning behind that starts to peel away. Kate is has subordinate tendencies and tends to confuse being treated badly with being dominated.

As she and Kyle begin hot steamy affair, they both start working out the kinks (sorry, had to do it) in their sexual appetites. Kate shows Kyle how to be dominate, and Kyle makes Kate realize dominance doesn’t equate disrespect.

Though Kate is significantly older than Kyle, their connection is much deeper than purely sexual and changes them forever.

Kyle is kind and respectful while pushing the lines that Kate wants pushed, he adores her while dominating her and breaks the cycle of abuse that Kate has been stuck in most of her life.

It’s sweet, it’s hot, and it’s the kind of alpha male romance like.

As part of my release celebration, I’m staring my blog tour right here, right now.

Comment below for a chance to win not only a Silk_Rope_Set_thumbcopy of Seducing Kate, but also a Silk Rope Set including soft wrist and ankle bands and  satin blindfold. Hey, once you read this, you’re gonna want these things. 😉

Winner will be notified February 1st.

 Seducing Kate

Available January 24, 2014 from Musa Publishing.

seducingkate-510 (1)Blurb:

It was lust at first sight for Kyle when he met his roommate Justin’s mother Kate. Kyle, a college transfer, was too far from home to visit on short school breaks, so Justin took him to Minneapolis where his mother was serving up a family meal for Thanksgiving.

One look left Kyle with a healthy obsession for Kate which grew with each visit. When he landed an internship in Minneapolis, he moved in with Kate for the summer, and got in touch with his voyeuristic side. It wasn’t until one late evening and a few too many glasses of wine that Kyle began to suspect his attraction wasn’t one-sided.

When he dared to push the issue, he found Kate more than willing to succumb to his seduction.

I’d barely spent time with Kate, just a few minutes in the kitchen before John had come strutting in. I had sat across from her at dinner making awkward conversation while Justin and John glared at each other over the spaghetti and garlic bread. It wasn’t like she’d crawled across the floor half naked and begged me to fuck her.

What the hell was it about her? Sure she was beautiful, but I’d dated beautiful women. None of them had pushed me to the point of obsession. I wanted nothing more than to throw Kate down and fuck her until she screamed. Not cried out like she had moments ago, but screamed. And dug her nails in my back. And wrapped her legs so tight around me I couldn’t breathe. I didn’t know why. All I knew was my body was borderline insane with lust, and my dick was so hard it hurt.

I turned the cold water on and splashed my face a few times to snap out of the Kate-induced haze. When I was finally able to think about something other than having sex with her, I went back downstairs.

I tried like hell to focus on the game, but my mind kept wandering. No, it wasn’t wandering. It was reliving my trip upstairs, from the groans, to the flash of tit, to the blush on Kate’s cheeks.

I held out for another hour of video games before I couldn’t take the agony of wanting her any longer. I went up to my room and slipped between the cool sheets of the guest bed. I put a sock over my dick and got off to images of my roommate’s mother.

I pictured her pale ass sticking in the air as I gripped her hips and slid into her tight pussy. I imagined my fist tangled in her hair as she sucked my cock. I even fantasized about her standing over me in black heels and a tight business suit as she ordered me to jerk myself harder.

As I came—hard—I wondered how I was ever going to control myself around her.

The Two-Named Author by Monette Michaels

Yes, I am one of those authors who has two pen names.  There were valid reasons at the time I chose to write some books under another name — Rae Morgan — but looking back I am not sure why.  It is what it is.

My Rae Morgan books are a lot like my Monette Michaels books.  Alpha-male heroes, smart heroines who can handle a strong man, and some action and suspense to make the story move.

If I had to distinguish the two pen names, I would say Rae had more paranormal story lines and edgier sex.  But, over the years, Monette has gotten a tad bit edgier in her sex scenes — though her characters take longer to get to them 🙂 — and she has some paranormal books of her own (The Gooden and Knight series).

The reason I am mentioning this is because some exciting things are happening with my Rae Morgan back list.  I have already shown the beautiful new covers for the first three Coven of the Wolf books in an earlier blog (displayed again here, just because they are gorgeous), but now I can announce that Book 4 in that series, No Secrets, novella length, will, on March 10th, be a stand-alone for the first time since it was originally published.

No Secrets continues the story line of Sheriff Debby Teague and Boris Petrov started in Treading the Labyrinth. A new cover will be forthcoming, again from the talented Lynn Tyler — and I can’t wait to see what she does for this one.

Also on the horizon for Rae is the re-release of another novella, Evanescence, as a stand-alone.  This novella was included in the Edge of Night anthology.  Evanescence is one of my favorite works of everything that I have written.  Here’s the blurb:

Security specialist Kai Axton blends into the night, a mist-like shadowy image of his human form.  Because of his freakish nature, he feels doomed to live his life alone – –  until he meets Sian York.

Sian is not who or what she seems; her past shrouded in a veil of mystery.  As Kai prepares to make his move to claim her, Sian’s past explodes onto the scene, forcing Kai to reveal his darkest secrets.  Can Sian accept Kai’s nature, or will he be doomed to live in the shadow world, forever alone?

I am thrilled that both of these novellas will now be more easily accessible for my fans.

Will there be other books by Rae?

Well-l-l-l … maybe.  You see, I have this idea … about an MMA fighter and a woman being  stalked … well, the story is in my head — and eventually it will have to come out. My head gets sort of crowded at times.  And while it wouldn’t be a paranormal, the edgier sex side of Rae would definitely be on display.

What do y’all think?  Should Rae write again?   And if so … what would you like to see?  Or, should I “come out” and just write all my future books as Monette with a nod to Rae?

I will choose one commenter to receive a download of one of my currently in print Coven books.

Get your tiger on…

Well, another release has come and gone and I’m still reeling. That’s right, in case you missed it yesterday, Jan. 13 marked the release of my latest paranormal erotic romance, Predator’s Refuge, Gemini Island Shifters 3.

LSB Cover Art Template for PhotoShop

Predator’s Refuge begins where Predator’s Serenade left off, but each book in the series centers around a different couple, so you can read them independently. I often get asked how I treat my series as far as developing characters from one book to another. Yes, you will see previous characters make “cameo appearances” here and there in the newer books, but I really prefer to make each romance stand alone. I like to know my readers can pick up a book out of order and not be lost. Sure, it’s always best to read in order so you can watch each romance blossom, but not imperative.

And with Predator’s Refuge, I went in a totally different direction. The first two books featured gorgeous bear shifter men, the often-feuding Snow brothers, but book 3 has a new type of hero. Anton Gaspar is a tiger shifter, and no ordinary tiger either. He is a prince among shifters. I traced his lineage back to a real set of kings in Hungarian history, the Grand Princes of the Federation of Hungarian tribes. Only in my world, Anton’s family possesses a bloodthirsty, mercenary heritage, one from which he is only too eager to separate himself.

Will he find his long-sought refuge on peaceful Gemini Island? Will he find it with Marci Lennox, the sassy Canada Lynx heroine who is experiencing her first heat?

Stay tuned…

Predator’s Refuge is now available at Liquid Silver Books at at all ebook outlets.
