Caffeine and Bingo

Life without Caffeine…day three…

I never considered myself dependent on caffeine. I drink an occasional cup of coffee, but not often. Sure, I have like two…maybe four…cups of hot tea in the morning, but it isn’t coffee.

So imagine my surprise when I went to the doctor earlier this week for a checkup and the first thing he did after taking my blood pressure was tell me to nix the caffeine.

But, I’m innocent, I tell ya!

He laughed, shook his head, and then said, “No more caffeine.”

Okay, fine. I keep decaf on hand, I can handle it.

Ladies and gentlemen, day one was fine. Until about 8 pm when I finally sat down on the sofa and was out like a light.

Day two? Perfectly fine. But then 8 pm rolled around, and I crashed and burned.

I am now on day three of no caffeine, Friday night, I have plans that require me to leave the house. I’m a bit terrified that I’m going to fall asleep before I even leave the house!

I didn’t get headaches or grouchiness. I may have been a bit more scatterbrained (don’t laugh!) but overall, I thought I was doing okay. Apparently, though, caffeine is what was keeping me alive and kicking after the sun went down.

How could I have been so dependent and not known it? Those addictions are sneaky, I tell ya.

Anyway, I realized how little I actually know about caffeine, so I did a little research and learned a few things.

  • Caffeine is a psychoactive drug and is used by most adults daily.
  • After digestion, it can take up to 45 minutes for the effects of caffeine to begin and they wear off within three hours.
  • The natural bitterness of caffeine is used as a pest deterrent in plants.
  • It is recommended that adults not consume more than 300mg of caffeine a day. Most adults average over 600mg.
  • And the most interesting thing…even decaffeinated beverages have some traces of caffeine in them. Boo!

We’re not going to listen to the last one. Excuse me while I double up on my decaffeinated tea.

Collecting Romance Books and Another Bingo Clue

Hot ZoneOne of my all-time favorite authors has another book out.  Jayne Ann Krentz (and all her pen names) is a must-buy, must-read author for me.  Always has been and always will be.  [See her new book to the left – I just received mine on Tuesday and am saving it for the weekend and uninterrupted reading time!]

And as it is usual with my favorite, go-to authors, I must have all her back list on my shelves so I can re-read her earlier books at my leisure.  Now, JAK has written a lot of books since she was first published in 1980.

Her pen names include Jayne Ann Krentz, Jayne Castle, Amanda Quick, Jayne Bentley, Jayne Taylor, Amanda Glass, and Stephanie James.

I own all of her books, under all her names, but 6 books.  Yes, all of them but 6.  The six I am missing are four of her Jayne Bentley books (A Moment Past Midnight, 1980; Maiden of the Morning, 1980; Hired Husband, 1981; and Sabrina’s Scheme, 1981) and two of her Jayne Castle books (Queen of Hearts, 1980, and Vintage of Surrender, 1980).

Sometime in the mid-1990s, I made it my goal to own everything she has ever written — and the only reason I don’t have those last few is scarcity and, when available, cost.  I do have some of her very early books in the original paperbacks that now cost a bundle, but I found them in small town used bookstores, the Goodwill, or through the kindness of my fellow book-a-holics. 🙂

My aspiration as an author — is to be like Jayne.  I hope for a long writing career.  I would also love to have fans who’d like to own all my books –probably the highest compliment any fan can give an author.

So, Jayne Ann Krentz, if you read this, please know, I LOVE your writing.  You have given me many enjoyable hours. Thank you.

BTW, I also have extensive collections of  JD Robb’s In Death series (ALL of them and I re-read the books every year beginning on Thanksgiving Day), Elizabeth Lowell, Donna Leon, Elizabeth Peters, Mary Stewart, and Kay Hooper. Yes, I am a book-a-holic. And, yes, I have a lot of bookshelves.

Now, please share any authors you collect religiously. Maybe I can find a new author to whom I can become addicted. 😉

Here’s the next Bingo Clue – this is to win a download of KaLyn Cooper’s Explosive Combination! Since this is KaLyn’s first book, you can start your book collection of her books from the very beginning.

Work In Progress and The Next BINGO Clue

As with most authors, I am on deadline.

Girard Quad

This one is self-imposed. At the beginning of the year, I created a business plan and set specific goals for 2014.

My next goal is to publish a Christmas novel which should have been completed by the end of July, according to The Plan.

Life happened and the story didn’t. Well, that’s not exactly accurate. I was extremely busy with family obligations in July, but I did write almost every day.

The story happened, and it happened, and more of it happened. I just hadn’t reached the end when planned. What I had hoped would be about 55,000 words didn’t work out that way.

Pool house

When I reached 40,000, my hero and heroine were finally having sex, but there was a lot more to the story yet to be told.

I’m currently at 57,000 and it’s moving along well. I figure I’ll finish somewhere around 75-80,000 words by the first week in September.

long sandy hair

For today’s blog I thought I’d share some visuals with you that I used when writing A Cancun Christmas. It’s a working title and has changed several times already, but goes with the next in this series, A Cancun Crisis.

Stay tuned for more updates on my work in progress.

My friends, it feels as if it’s been forever since I’ve been able to treat you to a sexy new cover, but today’s the day. As my faithful readers know, Predator’s Fire, Gemini Island Shifters 5, comes Sept. 8. You will find it that day at, as well as Amazon, ARE, to be followed at B&N and Kobo and other locations.

And we have cover!

Graphic artist Lyn Taylor, who has created all my Gemini Island Shifters books, did an amazing job. She has consistently made covers for me that truly reflect my characters, and found a way to make each of these covers unique, while retaining that magical Gemini Island flair. Thank you and big hugs to Lyn!

Another Clue!! Yes, we’re still playing!

clue two

Despite having a winner last week, we still have a goodie to give away from KaLynn, so we’re going to play until we get another winner. Get out those bingo boards and check out this clue….

In the meantime, If you’re not playing along, check out my newest release, Her Lieutenant, by my alter ego Theodora Lane, who writes traditional romance. Her_Lieutenant-Theodora_Lane-500x800 As you can see, it’s a historical set in 1600’s Russia, starring Arisha Bagry, a young woman in exile, and Lieutenant Alexei Zolvar, a young lieutenant who’d rather be fighting than bringing her back to her family. The sparks between these two fly, and I had a blast writing their dialogue. Here’s an example….

Looking into her fierce blue eyes, Alexei knew this would be a battle of wills. Damnation. Every cursed mile back to Bagry would be hard fought, with little gain for him in the end. Just another “Well done, Lieutenant Zolvar” and “We’ve got another mission for you that no one wants, Lieutenant Zolvar.”

“Nonetheless, you are going.” He straightened and faced her.

Ignoring him, she gathered the small bundles sitting on her desk, along with the apples, and placed them in a blue cloth bag. Removing her embroidered shawl, she exchanged it for a dark gray woolen traveling cloak and headed down the aisle to the door.

She was leaving.

Without him.

He followed her as fast as he could without running. It was undignified for an officer to chase a woman down in the streets, that’s what corporals were for.

“Where do you think you are going?” he barked.

“Home.” She flipped her hand at him, as if brushing him off.

She headed down a lane leading away from the cottage, putting distance between them. Forgoing dignity, Alexei broke into a run, jerked Ruj’s reins from the branch, and followed. She strode, hands in tight fists as they pumped at her sides.

He cursed under his breath—the woman, the mission, Captain Cherburko, and as always, his damn luck.

Dragging a reluctant Ruj behind him, he realized he had been a fool to think this would be an easy mission.

The narrow path opened into another clearing revealing a larger stone cottage with a thatched roof surrounded by a low stone wall. Dropping Ruj’s reins, Alexei put on a burst of speed and almost reached her.

Pushing open a creaking wooden gate, she stepped through, and with a small push from her, it swung back and cracked Alexei on his knee. He bit his lip, keeping back an oath.

She was to the door.

Throwing himself forward to make it there in time, he wedged his boot in the gap as she spun and slammed the door shut.

“Jesus wept!” This time, he could not hold back. “I think you have broken my foot.” He groaned through clenched teeth. She-devil? A hellcat.

“That’s what you get for trying to drag me off against my will.” She leaned against the door, one blue eye glaring at him through the crack. “If you do not leave me alone, I will call…a…a…”

“Druzhina?” By the narrowing of her eye, he knew he had scored his mark.

“No. A large farm hand. With a scythe.”

“Well, there do not seem to be any out here. Have you got one in there with you?” he drawled.

With a very feminine growl, she slammed her body against the door again. Alexei winced but held firm. Did breaking into her house and dragging her out constitute appropriate treatment? Or would he be taken out and beheaded with his own sword when she reported his behavior to her father?

Reason first. Death last.

“I am not finished with you.” His voice boomed against the wooden door.

“Well, I am finished with you. You are dismissed. Go away,” she ordered.

“You cannot order me, Lady Bagry. I take my orders from only three people, the Tsar, the General of the Druzhina, and my commanding officer. You are not on that list.”

She growled. “No one orders me, not even my father has that right anymore.” She fell against the door again. It would be a wonder if he could walk after this.

So much for reason. What lay between that and death? Force? Trickery? Bribery? Seduction? Damnation?

Taking a deep breath, he braced himself. He threw his shoulder against the door and it flew open. He fell forward and sprawled on the stone floor.

Rolling onto his back, he groaned and felt his nose. No blood, at least.

Arisha stood over him, hands on her hips, eyes narrowed, and the fiercest frown he had seen from her yet. That look might make a sane man flee, but not a Druzhina.

It’s available now at all the regular places….

Queer Romance Month

Happy Saturday, friends! Vanessa here with a special Saturday post to talk about an upcoming event near and dear to my heart.

I’m thrilled to be a part of the upcoming Queer Romance Month! This October, we’re celebrating romance fiction, queerness, allyship, and most of all, love.Badge 1

I believe one of the best things about the romance genre is that it’s sex-positive and rewards the protagonists with a happy ever after. I believe it’s important for everyone to be able to find characters in fiction to whom they can relate, and that everyone deserves to have their love and their relationships treated with equal respect and celebration.

I believe that love is love!

I hope you’ll join us this October!

Learn more about the event (and check out the amazing list of participating authors) at

And don’t forget to follow us on twitter:

Straitlaced by Robin Danner

As BINGO was called before it got to be my turn, I decided to use this post to announce my latest release. It’s been a few months, but Straitlaced hit cyber shelves last Friday and I’m super duper excited to bring an erotic historical to my readers. I turned up the heat for this one. Not only is the heroine an anti-heroine, but the hero is not the typical titled, rich lord. Declan and AnnMarie are two strong characters, ones I was excited to bring to life, and I hope everyone enjoys seeing them rise above their shared struggles.

AnnMarie Sommers was born into a life of privilege. Married to a duke at a young age, she was prepared to step into the role of dutiful wife and mother…until an unfortunate accident makes her a widow. Left nearly destitute by her dead husband’s family, she takes the little money she has saved and creates Fall From Grace, an elegant bordello where society’s ton comes out to play, a place where she can give into her wilder impulses under the guise of the bordello’s infamous madam, Lady Grace.

Declan Raddison was raised by the streets of London. Orphaned and left to fend for himself, the only way he could survive was by being the quickest and the strongest. He fought and clawed his way from a childhood spent pick-pocketing to amassing a king’s fortune on the Exchange. By day, he is a proper businessman, but at night he allows his darker desires to run free. Visiting Fall From Grace with a nobleman at his side, he is unprepared for a vision in white, an angel who is more suited for the drawing room than a wicked bordello. When he finds out that she is the notorious madam, Lady Grace, he will stop at nothing to possess her even if it leads to his own downfall.

Excerpt from Robin Danner’s Straitlaced:

The door opened and a figure, garbed in white, entered the room. The scent of gardenias came with her. Unsure whether it was the fragrance of the woman herself or the flowers filling the room, Declan took an appreciative sniff. Awareness made his body tingle.

Something about the woman, even though he couldn’t see her face, caught his attention and held it.

“Earl Reed, it’s a pleasure to see you again.” She came forward to greet Tom, her footsteps making no sound on the carpeted flooring.

Her emphasis on the word pleasure wasn’t lost on Declan. He jerked to attention, irrational jealousy holding him in its grip. He didn’t know her, but he wanted her. An indefinable air of surety and self-confidence emanated from the woman. Alluring…addictive.

Declan shifted closer to Tom, anxious to know more.

The woman chose a small settee and sat, arranging her skirts about her. The material fell away from her legs, showing a goodly amount of pale thigh and dimpled knee. “So, my lord, what is it you wish for you and your friend?”

Tom’s amused gaze went to Declan. “Surprise us.”

The woman turned her face toward him as well. A swath of white silk hid the lower half of her face, but her amethyst eyes glowed with challenge. The same eyes he’d seen in the painting.

“And does your friend have a preference?”

“Female, definitely female,” Tom answered.

A slim, dark eyebrow moved into a perfect arch. “Ménage?”

“No,” Declan answered before Tom could do so. Although he wasn’t averse to multiple partners, tonight he had only one woman in his sights.

“I see.” The woman hummed beneath her breath. “He seems a strapping sort. Genevieve has returned from Paris and may be up for the challenge. She is quite experienced in…” Her gaze dropped to his crotch. “Oral pleasure.”

The faceless Genevieve may once have taken his fancy. But not tonight.

He shifted closer to the madam, longing to see more of the body beneath the layers of white silk. “What does she look like, this Genevieve?”

Brief surprise flickered in her gaze. “She’s quite lovely, our most popular entertainer.”

Entertainer? Interesting term. “Is she slender?”

The eyebrows lowered mutinously. “Most would say so.”

“Then no.” He gave a firm shake of his head. “She will not do at all.”

He’d caught her off guard. He could tell by the way she cleared her throat and the brief flash of color across the bridge of her nose. “Is rondelet more to your liking?”

“You devil,” Tom remarked with a light laugh, obviously catching on to Declan’s ploy.

The woman stood and approached him. She was of average height, the top of her head nearly reaching his chin.

She eyed him, as if she couldn’t tell if he was teasing or serious. “I run a fine establishment. My girls are known far and wide to be the best at what they do. We can cater to any fantasy, no matter how dark, provided that everyone is willing and unharmed. Suppose you tell me what you would like?”

He’d unnerved her. Her eyes widened, the amethyst color sparking like jewels, before she quickly recovered. “Impossible.”

“Nothing is impossible,” he countered. “Money is no object.”

She lifted her chin to meet his gaze. “I’m not for sale.”

He allowed his lips to curve the tiniest bit. “Everyone has their price.”

“Declan!” Tom called out, clearly believing he’d gone too far.

The madam held out her hand to silence the earl. “No, I’m curious.” She crossed her arms across her ample chest. “What price do you believe is fair?”

“Five hundred pounds.” He would willingly pay more.

An astute businesswoman would realize the amount could easily feed and clothe a small family for a year. It was probably more than she made in a month or two.

A calculating intensity shone from her amazing eyes. “Five hundred pounds for an hour or two in bed with me?”

“A night,” he countered. “The entire night.”

“You’re very persuasive.” She lifted her hand and touched his cravat. “But I’m still not for sale.”

“A thousand pounds.” The offer fell from his lips before he could stop it.

She’d half turned away but pivoted back to face him. “You’re willing to part with a small fortune for one night?”

“Yes.” One night. This night. The need to have her consumed him.

“Declan, don’t be ridiculous,” Tom lectured.

He ignored his friend, keeping his gaze locked with the madam’s and waiting for her to make a decision.

“One thousand pounds?”

He nodded. “I’ll draw up a bank note for you immediately.”

Intrigue filled her expression but strangely no avarice. “Then, my dear sir, we have a deal.”

Time’s almost up … and Bingo Clue #9

Hello my darlings!

The time to puOccupationalHazardBundle_2500pxrchase White Collar Cowboy for $0.99 is almost up!

On August 31, Occupational Hazard, The Ultimate Workplace Romance Box Set will disappear … FOREVER!

Of course, White Collar Cowboy will still be available at all major eBook resellers, for it’s regular price of $2.99.

I’ve shared White Collar Cowboy on many occasions, how about a little taste of another book in the box set?

Written by my friend and partner-in-crime, Mandy Harbin, Against Company Policy, is a super sexy story about co-workers (who live in different cities) who find creative uses for technology to make up for the distance that separates them.

* * * * *

CoverWhen desire is faced with physical boundaries, it’s time to get a little creative…and a little kinky.

Cassie Tucker, a hard-working project leader at a software design company, can’t believe her luck when she’s assigned to work with the hottest guy at the firm. Too bad his office is hundreds of miles away. Technology will get them through—both in the boardroom and the bedroom.

Ian Cope has had the hots for Cassie for two years. Landing this project with her is a dream come true. Until he discovers he’s expected to use Cassie to aid in a consolidation plan that will shut down her office. He really should keep things professional, all things considered. But she’s a temptation he can’t refuse…and he’ll go against company policy to have her.

Reader Advisory: Our clever heroine orchestrates a hot BDSM experience for her lover to enjoy via video chat. And if she must utilize the aid of her best friend to make it happen? Well, a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do…

Either Cassie was starting to feel the effects of all this yummy wine she’d downed so far or she was lightheaded from what just happened. She preferred to put the blame on the alcohol. She was getting ready to respond when a new message window popped up.

Hi. You’re up late.

Gotta go, Sasha. Ian just messaged me.

Get out! Girl, I want deets on the morrow.

She closed their chat and stared at Ian’s message. What the hell was she going to say? Guess honesty was the way to go.

Was working. You have some great ideas. I sent you some other changes that I think need to be made.

Good. You have a Skype account? Since you’re working anyway, we can meet right now and go over some things without being interrupted.

Er, no, she didn’t have a Skype account. Her family lived close by and the only people she talked to online like that were through work.

Nope. But I can sign up real quick. I’m sure it’s not rocket science.

I’ll log on. Just do a search for my name and add me as a contact. Then select me and click video call.

Cassie created an account and added him as he’d requested. It was really easy. She opened up another window and logged on to her work network through the VPN connection, so she’d be ready for their impromptu meeting. Then she clicked the appropriate button on Skype to initiate the call.

“Hi, there,” Ian said when he came into view.

God, he was gorgeous. Cassie had only seen him in a tie, unless he wore a polo on casual days. Now he was in a tight-fitting t-shirt. It was faded but showed some football team and fit him like a second skin. He sat far enough back from his computer that she could see the tops of his lounge pants and upper thighs, but was too far for her to notice any bulge to discredit Sasha’s silly broken-dick theory.

He took a swig of his beer and set it aside, his muscles rippling with little effort. When he licked his lips, moisture pooled between her legs. She fantasized about what he could do with that wet tongue. Her nipples hardened, making her acutely aware of how thin her spaghetti-strap top was. She suddenly realized she’d had way too much to drink tonight and shouldn’t have agreed to this, but was too buzzed to care as much as she should.

“Hey,” she said a little too breathlessly, grabbing her glass of wine, swallowing the last of it and filling it up again, damn near draining the bottle. With as much as she’d had to drink, her mouth shouldn’t be so dry.

He chuckled. “Looks like you’ve had fun tonight. Unless you had someone helping you with that bottle.” He took another pull of his beer.

“Nope. And I actually stopped working before I really started feeling the effects, just so you know.”

He threw his hands up, one still holding his beer. “Oh hey, I’m not here to judge. I’m on my fourth one of these.”

“Good, then if I go down, I’m taking you with me.” She chuckled as she took another sip.

Something dark flashed across Ian’s eyes but was gone before she could fully analyze it. “So tell me about yourself, Cope.”

He cocked an eyebrow with his beer halfway to his luscious mouth. “What do you want to know, Tucker?”

She tilted her head as she thought. “Do you live at home with your mom?” Cassie blurted.

He spewed beer before throwing his hand up to his mouth. He swallowed and coughed as he laughed. “Where the hell did that come from?”

She was trying not to laugh at the scene he made, but she wasn’t doing a very good job. “Just answer the question, Cope,” she said with mock seriousness.

“No, I don’t live with my mom.”

“Damn,” Cassie muttered as she took another sip of her wine. There goes one possible theory.

“What did you say?”

“Oh nothing, nothing.” She waved her hands dismissively. “I probably should’ve just asked how tall you were instead.”

“What does that have to do with living with my mom?” There was genuine amusement in his eyes.

Cassie shrugged innocently. It wasn’t as if she could come out and tell him about her conversation with Sasha.

“I’m six-two.”

“Damn!” she mumbled into her wineglass.

He laughed. “I don’t know if I should be offended or what. Normally, women like a tall man who doesn’t live at home with mommy.”

“Not me.”

Ian leaned forward, setting his beer down. “No?”

“No. I like short titty babies all the way. Even better if they have broken dicks.”

He threw his head back in a fit of laughter and slapped his chest, leaving his hand over his heart while he got his composure. Damn, but he was sexy. Cassie wished she could just crawl through the screen and straddle his lap.

“Well, I’m batting zero, darlin’,” he said as he wiped his eyes.

“I knew it’d never work,” she said, feigning disappointment.

His smile began to fade and he swallowed, though he didn’t take a drink. He rubbed his hands on what had to be his legs, but Cassie couldn’t see that far. He seemed to be getting uncomfortable, and she felt guilty for allowing the conversation to trickle into an inappropriate area. Heat tinged her cheeks, but as much as she wanted to say it was because of embarrassment, she knew that’d be a lie. No matter how he felt, she was turned-on and too buzzed to be smart about this. Her pussy was wet and she ached to touch it. Oh yeah, as soon as she ended this call, she’d be taking care of herself, pretending it was Ian Cope.

She finished her wine quickly. “Well, I think I’m too drunk to get any work done.” And too horny. “I’ll catch you tomorrow.”

“Wait, I—”

Cassie clicked the button and the screen got smaller. Then she pushed her laptop away and fell back on her bed. God, why did that man have to be the hottest thing she’d even seen? And now she knew he was tall, self-sufficient with a working dick. She groaned at the thought of what he could do with his big, hard cock and pushed her pants and panties down her thighs. She let her fingers trail lightly over her belly to her pussy, slowly tracing the seam.

“I want you to touch me,” she whispered, imagining it was Ian’s finger about to breach her barrier.

Her finger slipped into her wet folds and she gasped. She pushed two fingers inside and fucked herself slowly, teasingly. She worked her fingers, thrusting until more cream flooded her. Then she pulled out, circling her swollen nub.

“Yes,” she breathed. “Like that.”

She wanted Ian’s mouth on her, ravishing her, drinking her honey, sucking her clit, his large body hovering over her, dominating her. Even though she tried it once, she never really got into the whole Dom/sub dynamic, but she had to admit a little domination was sexy as hell. Just the thought of him holding her down, seeing to her pleasure, ensuring his own, was enough to send her to the edge. She stopped teasing herself and shoved her fingers back inside her pussy while she used her other hand to rub her clit. She frantically tried to get herself off, thrusting her hips up, fucking herself while she fingered her hard button. She was moaning, so close, almost there.

She squeezed her eyes shut because she started to see stars. Then colors exploded behind her eyelids as her climax hit. She was panting as she brought herself down from the heights of her pleasure when she heard a masculine roar. She shot up in the bed, yanking herself out of her foggy bliss to see Ian’s image within a smaller screen on the laptop. Oh, fuck! Please don’t be a live shot. She clicked to enlarge it and gasped when she saw him sitting in the same place he’d been when she had disconnected their video call—or when she’d thought she’d disconnected it.

Only he wasn’t watching her. His head was thrown back, his hand fisted around his cock, stroking it while cum shot onto his belly and all over his hand.

She was frozen as she stared, mortified at what he’d witnessed, yet fascinated at what he was doing.

Groaning, he looked up and saw her looking at him, her image sobering him.

“Cassie, I—”

She shut the laptop before he could finish.

This was bad. This was very bad.
