It’s the Goat’s Fault

I’m the one who got Chloe and Paynter together. It’s my fault. I’m responsible.

And don’t give me any of that happy coincidence bull crap. Or it was an accident. Or karma or fate or—eye roll—whatever.

It was me. I did it.

You see, I didn’t really enjoy my life out on that farm. It was boring. Nothing but animals bouncing around, acting crazy, getting in my face and stealing my hay when I was looking the other way, usually scoping out somebody else’s hay to steal. One time those crazy ass farmers even had the nerve to dress me in pajamas.

I can assure you, that was the last time. Some scars don’t ever go away. Like the scar from when I caught a glimpse of myself as I trotted past the freshly-washed car parked outside the barn—it’s just as bad as the permanent bite marks indented in the farmer’s hand.

So anyway, I needed to get away from those animals. They weren’t my style. I needed freedom…or something. So I left. A cattle guard ain’t a goat guard, after all.

I trotted right down that driveway and wobbled over those really, really uncomfortable-to-walk-on metal things the farm laid across the ditch at the fence line. Then I bounced along next to the road—getting more than my fair share of horn honks, I might add. Once I reached the end of the fence line, I veered left and headed across the field next to the farm. Honks or no, it’s a little intimidating and maybe a tad scary to walk next to a road where giant metal contraptions on four—and sometimes two—rubber wheels zoom along at speeds I can’t even really fathom.

Okay, I admit I may have bounced a little at that point. Maybe a lot. But bouncing is so much fun, and that field was so wide open and…and irresistible. It’s possible I didn’t really mean to run away. It’s possible I only wanted to see if the grass really was greener on the other side of the fence. (It is.) It’s possible I was having so much fun leaping and jumping and vaulting that I didn’t realize I’d left the farm behind until, well, I did.

Well, it only made sense to forge ahead. Besides, there was a lake ahead of me and I was thirsty. And, well, I like splashing in the water. Which I did, a lot. Until I noticed something shiny on the other side. Well, not exactly shiny, but certainly interesting. Big, two-story brick buildings, surrounded by bright, colorful flowers.

Yummy flowers. I particularly enjoy hydrangeas, FYI.

So I trotted along the lake’s edge until I reached the yard belonging to one of those red brick structures, and then I headed straight for the pink and blue flowers.

That’s when the lady saw me, the one with the dark hair, big blue eyes, and red lips. The guy who lives next door says she looks like Liz Taylor, but I don’t actually know what that means, so… shrug.

Anyway, next thing I know, she’s wrapped a rope around my neck and is stalking toward the guy, who, by the way, is staring at her like he wants to eat her. It’s the same way I stare at the hydrangeas. And then she hands the rope to him and says the joke’s on him, and the next thing I know, my name is Dog.

But then she says that’s a lousy name for a goat.

Wait, you didn’t know you were reading a blog post written by a goat? You don’t think we can write blogs? We do it all the time!

In between eating the hydrangeas, anyway.

If you’re curious as to what the hell the goat is talking about (and whether he got stuck with the name ‘Dog’), check out Chloe and Paynter’s book, Sexy Bad Neighbor:

This Book is Shore to Please

For today’s post, I decided to feature a book written by a friend of mine, instead of bore you all with my usual whatever-it-is-I-usually-post. I’ve read this book, which just released on November 26, so I can recommend it with confidence. It’s a fun read if you’re into paranormal, beaches, and marine animals. Oh, and love. And comedy. There are plenty of snarky, funny moments in this one.

The way the premise came about–it’s book 4 in a contemporary series–is pretty interesting, too. Check out what the author, Annette Mardis, has to say…

Have you ever jokingly tossed out an idea … and it turned out to be just what you needed? That’s how Shore is Magical, my latest Gulf Shore novel and my first paranormal, was conceived.

I was doing an online chat with other authors when the subject turned to paranormal novels, particularly shape-shifters. Confession: I haven’t read too many of those books, usually preferring reality (or a reasonable facsimile of it) over fantasy.

The other authors were discussing the merits of the animals usually favored in shifter novels: tigers and other big cats, bears and wolves, primarily.

“How about a dolphin shifter?” I kiddingly suggested in full smart-aleck mode. Dolphins are one of my favorite animals and have been since I was a little girl who listed Flipper at the top of her must-see TV list.

Surprisingly—to me anyway—the other chat participants quickly and enthusiastically chorused their approval of dolphin shifters. So I thought, why not?

The challenge was fitting a paranormal story into a contemporary romance series that’s firmly rooted in real life. I spent more than thirty years working as a newspaper reporter and editor, pursuing a fair presentation of the facts as both sides saw them. Making things up doesn’t come as easily to me as to other authors.

I do a lot of research to ensure that my Gulf Shore novels stay within the realm of possibility. And I volunteer at a marine animal hospital, so I’ve seen firsthand how such operations conduct themselves.

So how do I justify a heroine whose very existence defies belief?

By making the details of her story as conceivable as possible. And by letting the other characters express their skepticism and at times outright rejection of the idea that a person can assume an animal shape, and then change back.

Despite her otherworldly ability and a lifestyle shrouded in secrecy, Marina Seaward, the leading lady of Shore is Magical, is not that different from other women. She squabbles with her sisters and takes family obligations seriously, but chafes at the strings that bind her to their restrictive traditions. Seeking true love, she’s beaten down by a jealous and controlling man but fights to preserve her identity and independence.

Marina isn’t looking for a savior or a prince charming. And that’s a good thing, because Kenshin Hamasaki is neither. He’s a good man but a flawed one, and he hasn’t fully recovered from the tragedies that nearly sucked him down a dark hole of despair.

Kenshin’s wounded heart and soul urges him to play it safe, but he’s inexplicably drawn to the mysterious stranger who risks everything in an effort to fit into his world in pursuit of her happily ever after.

Lurking in the background, however, is a dark presence from Marina’s past, who threatens to end this unlikely pairing before she and Kenshin can fully explore whether they’re destined to be together.

Find out whether Marina and Kenshin’s relationship ends in romance or ruin by snaring your digital copy of Shore is Magical, Gulf Shore book 4, available now from all major e-book retailers and from

Here’s a snippet from one of my favorite scenes in the book, when Kenshin first encounters Marina in very enticing human form. This scene takes place in the marine animal hospital at Gulf Shore Aquarium, where Kenshin works. He thinks he’s helping to rehabilitate a rescued dolphin, but he gets the surprise of his life one night.

Looking up, Kenshin almost dropped his phone. He stared, eyes wide, mouth open, as a lithe form emerged from the pool, water cascading down her body. Where had she come from and, more importantly, why was she naked? Then he glanced behind her and received his second shock.

The rescued dolphin was—gone. Impossible. He gave his cheek a light smack to make sure he hadn’t succumbed to exhaustion and passed out. That was entirely possible, given he hadn’t slept more than two hours at a stretch since leaving Erica’s bed.

If this was a dream, it was incredibly realistic. Off the charts sexy, too.

The woman sauntering toward him was hotter than an egg yolk on Florida asphalt in August. Her brown hair framed a pair of turquoise eyes that shimmered like the sea. Her rosebud nipples all but begged for his touch, and he imagined himself at home between her long, supple legs, which were as toned as the rest of her.

The corners of her lips tipped up as if she’d read his mind. Kenshin’s gaze darted around the rehab unit, looking for backup if he needed it. But Kelsey had gone home early for a change, Flipper probably was loading up on caffeine and carbs, and Sitara was in her office catching up on paperwork.

Kenshin’s carnal fantasies dissolved amid concerns about a massive security breach.

“Who are you, and why are you here?” he demanded.

“You know who I am.” The woman’s voice was as smooth as spiced rum sliding over ice cubes. “You just don’t want to admit it.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Your friends brought me here from the beach, jostling me around in that canvas thing. What do you call it?”

“Are you talking about the sling?”

“It felt like they dragged me across a rocky sea bottom. Very bad for the delicate skin.” She pouted and pointed to a chafe mark on her elbow. “Get something softer, for Poseidon’s sake.”

“This is…insane. Why aren’t you wearing clothes?”

She shrugged. “I didn’t bring any.” Cocking her head, she studied him for a moment before her expression turned playful. “Don’t you like me as I am? I thought the males of your species enjoyed seeing females without garments.”

What an odd way to say that guys lust after naked women. “You’re beautiful, and I think you know that, but it’s beside the point.”

“Is it?”

She’d come close enough for Kenshin to stroke a hand down all that lush, bare flesh, and he almost did so to make sure she was real. Common sense kicked in before he acted on the impulse. Besides being a stranger, she was, well, strange.

“Listen, lady, I don’t know what your game is but—”

“Game? There is no game. Your people rescued me, and now I’m your responsibility. Isn’t that how this works?”

Kenshin glanced around again, convinced that any minute Flipper or someone would leap out and scream, “Gotcha!” This had to be a prank. Stuff like this didn’t happen otherwise, at least not to him. But after that dolphin encounter at the reef, anything seemed possible.

Kenshin felt her warm breath on his face. It smelled…fishy? When he wrinkled his nose, she clapped her hand over her mouth. Now she was self-conscious? He looked into her eyes, an inviting shade matched only by a secluded tropical lagoon.

“What’s your name?”

“Marina what?”

“Just Marina.”

And now a word about the Gulf Shore series

My contemporary romance series is set in the fictional west-central Florida beach town of Gulf Shore, where you’ll taste salt on your skin and feel sugary white sand between your toes, the warm sun on your shoulders, and a sea breeze ruffling your hair.
You’ll meet swoon-worthy alpha males who aren’t embarrassed to cuddle a rescued baby dolphin in their muscular arms, and accomplished women looking for an equal partner who thinks that smart is sexy.
You’ll get up close and personal with sea life, join the “snipe and gripe” club for girls’ nights out, and fall in love with a talking parrot who acts like a little boy in a bird suit.
You’ll go behind-the-scenes at the local aquarium and out to the beach to rescue marine animals in distress and to cheer others as they return to the wild.

And once you visit Gulf Shore, you just may find yourself wishing you could stay.

Getting Dirty with Rosanna Leo

hrpredatorsrescueThanks so much to the ladies of Love, Lust and Laptops! I am thrilled to be here in my former stomping ground. KaLyn was kind enough to invite me to visit and share the latest on my new paranormal romance release:

          Predator’s Rescue

          Gemini Island Shifters 7

This book continues in the same vein as my other shape shifter books but in one way, it’s a little different. Things get dirty in this one.

Now keep your pants on, you naughty monkeys. Of course, we do get “dirty” between the sheets, but the characters are living a little closer to the edge in this one. We see grit and grime and even a little bit of fish slop. Seriously, at one point my heroine Fleur gets covered in fish slop. (You will have to read the book for more info on that part. There’s no way I’m giving that scene away.)

The characters get dirty in other ways, too. There are references to some serious drug use in this book. In fact, Fleur’s mother Barbi is an addict and she is addicted to a dangerous shape shifter drug called “Spider.” I give the reader a glimpse into Barbi’s world and it isn’t pretty.

In the interests of full disclosure, I will also admit my hero Jani may encounter some grimy moments of his own, but again, you’ll need to read the book. If I mentioned the situation here, you’d think I’d lost my mind.

Why dwell on such unpleasant details? Life isn’t always pretty and packaged in a bow. Sometimes it’s messy. Although I write paranormal romances, I think it’s important they feel real. Both my hero and heroine are dealing with some huge emotional issues. To me, dirt symbolizes the confusion in their hearts. They need to shed old hurts and stains so they can emerge fresh and clean. Their love allows them to do this.

I hope you’ll read Predator’s Rescue and get dirty with me.

Tiger shifter Jani Fodor should have washed his hands of Fleur Bissette long ago. However, when she disappears from the shape shifter sanctuary on Gemini Island, he can’t forget her, and launches a fraught two-week search to find her. He thinks she’ll be grateful but the petulant she-wolf resents his intrusion in her life.

Jani recently liberated Fleur from a vicious cult of shape shifters, where she was brainwashed by the sadistic August Crane. The wolf shifter terrorized their friends at the Ursa Fishing Lodge and Resort on Gemini Island. Labeled a “bad girl” all her life, Fleur knows she’ll never fit in with the good guys at the Ursa, no matter how much Jani tries to convince her of their regard. Besides, she can’t stay with Jani. Although he’s the closest thing she’s ever had to a friend, their chemistry is explosive in the worst way.

When a new menace arises, in the form of a vicious drug dealer with a grudge, Jani is adamant Fleur accept his help to rehabilitate her addict mother and remove her from the influence of her dealer. Fleur accepts Jani’s assistance but as they work together, friendship erupts into passion. Neither can deny their lust-struck spirit animals and before long, they realize their connection runs deeper than they ever expected.

Despite the threats posed by the drug dealer, the worst danger of all dwells inside Fleur. Haunted by the spirit of August Crane, Fleur is inundated by visions that torment her. She is consumed by guilt and plagued by old hostilities. Can this bad girl make good? And is Jani’s love enough to save her from her demons?

Once again, Jani’s temper flared but he swallowed his simmering rage. He stood and raised his voice so he could be heard over Loretta Lynn’s tinny warbling as it emanated from the jukebox. “Now I’m going to ask everyone in this shithole one more time. I’m looking for Fleur Bissette. Where is she?”

There was a crash and a feminine cry from behind one of the closed doors. Jani didn’t hesitate. He launched himself off his stool and toward the door, already on the verge of shifting. His tiger hairs danced in anticipation under his skin, ready to burst through his pores.

The two men who’d approached him grabbed him by the shoulders and hauled him back.

“Hey, asshole,” the grizzly man shouted. “You’re not allowed back there. Private parties only.”

Jani glanced at the hand on his shoulder and then at the man. “One warning. Take your hands off me.”

The idiot snorted and looked at his pal. “Why waste your time lookin’ for Fleur anyway? That girl’s nothing but trouble. Trouble loves her. In fact, she’s probably spreading her legs to trouble right now.”

Jani reached for the man’s arms and spun him around. “What did you say?”

“It’s all the bitch knows how to do. That’s all women like her are good for anyway.”

Jani reared back and let his fist fly, cracking it against the man’s face. The grizzly shifter flew across the room, hitting the back wall, collapsing to the floor. The grim satisfaction of seeing the man crumple overrode any pain in his knuckles. In fact, it felt so good to hit the jackass he had to hold his hand behind his back so he wouldn’t hit him again.

No one, no one, insulted Fleur. The man was lucky Jani didn’t kill him for the slight. Fleur had been called too many names in her time, and he’d made it his mission to see she was never belittled again.

Jani nodded toward the other men. “Don’t even think of stopping me.”

He tried the closed door, relieved to find it unlocked. He flung the door open and his tiger senses homed in on her immediately.

Fleur had clearly been serving drinks to the small group of shifter bikers inside, but one of them had gotten a little too close to the new waitress. Her tray of drinks lay on the floor, smashed, and one of the men had her over his lap. His large hand caressed her ass as she squirmed in his grip.

As time seemed to freeze for Jani, Fleur turned to glance at him. She mouthed his name.

The silent plea made his heart twist in his chest. Had she actually spoken aloud? He wasn’t sure. He couldn’t hear her voice. His ears were ringing too much as his tiger roared her name.

Her dark eyes seemed to grow darker, black with emotion, but he didn’t take time to analyze the sentiment flitting behind her irises.

With a noise that must have sounded more animal than man, Jani raced toward her and pulled her off the man’s lap. He moved her toward the door, so she wouldn’t be hurt in the melee. He then turned to the shithead who’d grabbed her, a growl emanating from his furious core.

The biker, startled and likely drunk, didn’t react quickly enough to shift. Jani hauled him off his chair and thrust him toward the wall.

“Jani,” Fleur called, her voice loud and clear now. “Don’t. You don’t know what you’re doing.”

“His hand was on your ass. I know enough.”

One of the other men was foolhardy enough to try to stop him. He tried to yank Jani away but Jani snapped his arm back, using his elbow to hammer the man in the face. Cradling his bloody nose, the man retreated.

Jani turned his attention back to the shifter who’d groped Fleur. “That was the last time you ever touch her.” Bracing himself, he head-butted him. A sickening crack sounded in the room. The man moaned, his eyes rolled back, and he dropped to the floor.

Ignoring the pain exploding through his forehead, Jani marched toward Fleur, picked her up, and hauled her over his shoulder.

“Hey. Put me down! You have no right.”

No right. He might have laughed if he wasn’t concerned about getting her out of there in one piece.

Holding out his free arm to warn off any others who might consider having a go at him, Jani carried the writhing Fleur out of the room and out of the bar. His heart thumped against his chest just from holding her. Granted, he hadn’t quite envisioned holding her like this, her ass high in the air near his face, but it pleased him more than he cared to admit out loud. Something about the scenario made his inner caveman very happy.

When someone breaks into romance author Peyton Matthews’ Virginia Beach home to steal her newest manuscript, her publisher hires Noah Chase, a former Navy SEAL and the newest member of GAPS to be her bodyguard.

And while she thought that having a stranger hanging around 24/7 would mess with her creativity, the Navy SEAL definitely comes in handy when she’s choreographing fight scenes. All that hand-to-hand action and rolling around on the floor with him gets her pulse racing, but while Noah is falling for Peyton too, he doesn’t act on it. He needs to keep his head in the game and focus on the job or he could end up getting her killed. She might not think she’s in danger, but his gut tells him differently.

Maryann Jordan

I have always been an avid reader. I joke that I “cut my romance teeth” on the old bodice ripper romance books. Last year I started a blog to showcase wonderful writers. In 2014, I finally gave in to the characters in my head pleading for their story to be told. Thus, Emma’s Home was created.

I work as a counselor in a high school and have been involved in education for the past 30 years.  I have been married to a wonderfully patient man for 32 years and have 2 adult, very supportive daughters.  When writing, my dog or one of my cats will usually be found in my lap!

Marissa Dobson

Born and raised in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area, Marissa Dobson now resides about an hour from Washington, D.C. She’s a lady who likes to keep busy, and is always busy doing something. With two different college degrees, she believes you are never done learning.

Being the first daughter to an avid reader, this gave her the advantage of learning to read at a young age. Since learning to read she has always had her nose in a book. It wasn’t until she was a teenager that she started writing down the stories she came up with.

Marissa is blessed with a wonderful supportive husband, Thomas. He’s her other half and allows her to stay home and pursue her writing. He puts up with all her quirks and listens to her brainstorm in the middle of the night.

Her writing buddy Cameron (a cocker spaniel) is always around to listen to her bounce ideas off him. He might not be able to answer, but he’s helpful in their own ways.

Donna Michaels

It’s all my mother’s fault.

She read to me before I could read and opened up that magical world where I still reside today. Then came television and movies. Now I had three avenues that fed my imagination…and boy could I eat! As you no doubt figured out, this lead to my writing career. I’m a NY Times, USA Today, and Amazon Bestselling Award winning author. Phew, that was a mouthful! Multi-published in e-book and print with several publishers, I certainly have a ton of voices in my head.

I’m happily married to a military man for 28 years. We have four children and several rescued cats. Michael’s been in the Army National Guard since before he graduated. The Guard has been a part of our lives right from the start. It was only natural for the military to spill into my writing. God bless the military and their families. Thank you all for your sacrifices.

You already know my mom inspired my love of reading, but it was my dad who got me hooked on movies. Even now, if I had the time, I could happily go from one movie to another all day long. They are the reason I love mixed genre and why I can’t just stick to just one in my writing, although, as you can tell, I have a soft spot for cowboys and the military.

Well, that’s about it. Thanks for getting to know me a little better. Remember, keep reading to your children. The journey you’re igniting is precious. And the next time you’re at the movies, turn around. I just might be the person sitting behind you. No, not the one throwing popcorn (it’s too expensive to waste). I’m the one already imagining the sequel.

Have a great day and thanks for reading!

Broken Dreams by Guest Author Lindsay McKenna

It’s my pleasure today to welcome Lindsay McKenna to Love, Lust and Laptops. With over 150 romance novels, she is a storyteller extraordinaire! Check out Broken Dreams  and  the rest of the Delos Series.
Hi Readers!
Welcome to 2016!  I’ve got a BUNCH of books coming out by three different publishers (I’ve been busy) ;-
BROKEN DREAMS, Book 4 of the Delos Series, is Alexa Culver’s story.  She is a USAF A-10 Warthog combat jet pilot who flies the skies of Afghanistan, keeping troops on the ground safe.  She comes from a military dynasty family.
USAF Captain Alexa Culver is not weak or incapable; just the opposite.  She loves to fly.  She’s been deployed to Afghanistan for four years straight.  Her twin brother, Delta Force Sergeant Matt Culver, is also assigned to Bagram Army Base.  And so is her oldest sister, Captain Tal Culver, USMC, who is assistant CO to a Marine sniper unit operating out of the same base.

Chuckling, Gage nodded. “Let me pick up the cost of the pizza, then.”
“Fair enough,” Matt Culver said, asking the bartender for a third plate.
The smell was intoxicating. Gage ordered two more beers and paid the bartender for everything. It was the least he could do for Matt. He’d been a good friend for years.
Gage’s mouth watered as he looked at the pizza. It was a triple cheese and pepperoni, and Matt was placing a big wedge on his plate. The two men began wolfing down the slices, nearly burning their mouths, but they couldn’t have cared less. Gage lost himself in the spicy-sweet taste and aroma of the salt and cheese and saw that Matt was busily attacking the rest, gulping it down as fast as he could.
Suddenly, Gage was aware of a faint, feminine fragrance. As a Marine Corps sniper, his senses were acute, and he picked up the subtle scent of almonds. Where was that coming from?
He lifted his head just in time to see a young woman stop beside their table and put her hands on her hips, grinning at Matt.
“Well! I’d better hurry up and grab some pizza, or it’ll be all gone before I can sit down!” She greeted her brother and aimed a warm smile at them both. Gage instantly put down his pizza and stood up, giving her a slight nod of hello.
Matt did the same and then pulled out the chair between himself and Gage. “Hey, Alexa, you got here just in time! Gage and I were taking no prisoners with this pizza. Have a seat.”
Gage was mute, however. All he could do was stare. Damn! Alexa Culver was drop-dead gorgeous! Never mind that she wore a shapeless desert-colored flight suit. Her red hair was almost auburn, with gold and burgundy strands mixed into the single braid between her shoulder blades. She was probably around five feet seven inches and maybe one hundred thirty-five pounds. And she was curvy in all the right places. She took off her Air Force garrison cap and stuffed it in a large pocket in the thigh of her flight suit.
Gage’s heart started a slow pound of appreciation, and he sat down, surprised. Meanwhile, Alexa sat down and scooted up to the table, grabbing a wedge of pizza.
“Gage,” Matt said, “meet my sister Alexa Culver. Alexa, meet one of the best Marine snipers I have the privilege to work with, Gage Hunter.”
Alexa turned, smiled, and said, “Nice to meet you, Gage. I’d shake your hand but I’ve got pizza in both of mine.” She laughed, holding his dark gaze.
“Nice to meet you, ma’am,” Gage said, drowning in her gold-flecked hazel eyes.
“Oh, please, drop the ‘ma’am.’” She smiled and held his gaze. “I’m Matt’s sister, so any friend of his is a friend of mine.”
Gage liked that idea. “Then it’s nice to know you, Alexa.”
She gave him a dazzling, genuine smile. “Same here.”
Although he’d picked up on the heightened male interest in the room when Alexa arrived, she seemed totally unaware of it. Her full lips closed around the pizza, her eyes blissfully shutting as she savored it.
Gage felt like a shy teenager again, awkward and out of his league, as he stared at her. And then he caught himself, snapped out of it, and resumed eating, but with less gusto. This woman fascinated him. Everything she did, everything she said.
He found he was enjoying watching Alexa eat. The woman ate like she meant it, not like a lot of women who picked through their food, leaving half of it on the plate. At the same time, there was a delicacy to her, from her long, slender fingers to the clean line of her neck. He wondered if it extended to the rest of Alexa’s body that was hidden beneath the frumpy flight suit.
He was mesmerized by her mouth, those lips of hers; she didn’t wear any lipstick, but she didn’t need any. Gage’s lower body stirred, reminding him how long it had been since he’d had a relationship. This woman, though, was off-limits. She was his friend’s sister, and that was taboo among military men. One did not go after a buddy’s sister.

Deep Desire – ZA Maxfield – Book Tour

RELEASE DATE: February 3, 2015

LENGTH: 240 Pages

SERIES: The Deep Series Book 1

BLURB: As the Indiana Jones of historical erotica, there is no document existing—or just rumored to exist—Adin Tredeger can’t unearth. Why he would risk the biggest coup of his career to join the mile-high club is beyond him. But the disarming, dark-eyed man who somehow enters Adin’s locked airplane washroom has him completely nude and coming apart. All without a whimper of protest.

From that moment, Adin and Donte Fedelta engage in an international battle of wit and cunning. The prize—a priceless, 500-year-old journal with illustrations so erotic it could make the Marquis de Sade blush.

Yet Donte’s desire for the journal goes far beyond simple possession. The undead nobleman wrote it. And he’s not above using every trick in his otherworldly arsenal—including seduction—to get it back.

Chemistry draws them together even as fortune tugs them apart. But when a third party joins the chase, they must unite to fight an enemy with a deadly goal—to erase Donte from history.

This book is a rerelease of a previously published book, with substantial rewrites.

Warning: This product contains one cocky college professor, one centuries-old vampire who is out to show him who’s at the top of the food chain, and red wine. Because it goes so well with humble pie.

Hi! I’m Z.A. Maxfield, better known as ZAM. I want to extend my sincere thanks to Lust and Laptops Blog for helping me celebrate my latest release, Deep Desire, book one of The Deep Series.

These books have been edited. They’ve been retitled. There are new, cool covers. They’ll be available simultaneously in ebook and print. If you’ve read Notturno and Vigil, then you can either pick up Deep Desire now and Deep Deception in May to see what has changed, or you can wait until December to find out what happens in the last installment, Deep Deliverance. The choice is entirely yours. (But they do substantial edits and very, very cool new covers!)

I thought I’d start today by asking literature professor and rare document expert Adin Tredeger take a typical quiz at…

What kind of Romantic are you?

Really? You want me to take an online quiz? I guess I could do that. Okay, shoot.

Question: Where’s the best way to find love?

Adin’s Answer: Adin looks guilty at this. He blushes. Shrugs. “I’m not looking for love per se, and hookups…seems to find me. Okay the only one here that even seems reasonable to me is this one–”

Stop looking

Question: Who was your first crush?

Adin’s answer: Adin reads and rereads the choices. “Seriously? Is this it? The boy next door? A classmate? Someone on TV? I didn’t even watch TV. This is the only choice that even marginally fits.”

Someone Older.

Question: What do you do when you’re attracted to someone?

Adin’s Answer: Make eye contact. “That one. That’s usually all it takes.”

Question: Choose a romantic vacation destination.

Adin’s Answer: “Hmm… Paris or Florence. I seem to have a yen for all things Italian these days. Florence it is…”

Question: Which word describes your relationship history?

Adin’s Answer: “Blessed? Fulfilling? Are they kidding with this shit? Uh…I’m going to have to go with—”

Question: Which Valentine’s Day gift would you like?

Adin’s Answer: “Wow. I don’t want any of these things, expensive dinner, gold necklace… Okay, here’s one:”

A coupon for anything I want. “Let’s see… there’s a certain sixteenth century homoerotic journal I would really love to get my hands back on…”

Question: When is the right time to get married?

Adin’s answer: “Ah. This:” Who wants to get married?

Question: What’s you’re favorite fictional romance?

Adin’s Answer: “Romeo and Juliet is one of the choices? They die! Rhett and Scarlet? Nope. Who writes these quizzes? I only recognize about half these names, and Liz and Dick aren’t even here, although I’d pick them in a heartbeat. If I have to pick one, I’ll choose:”

Kermit and Miss Piggy.

Okay, so that’s the end of the quiz… And the verdict is…

Adin’s reaction: “Oh, hey. I got High Class Romantic. Apparently I like the finer things in life and I’m a highly rare person who always expects the best. I think the subtext here might be, ‘You’re an arrogant ass.’ Haha. These things are accurate as hell, aren’t they?”

AUTHOR BIO: Z.A. Maxfield started writing in 2007 on a dare from her children and never looked back. Pathologically disorganized, and perennially optimistic, she writes as much as she can, reads as much as she dares, and enjoys her time with family and friends. Three things reverberate throughout all her stories: Unconditional love, redemption, and the belief that miracles happen when we least expect them.
If anyone asks her how a wife and mother of four can find time for a writing career, she’ll answer, “It’s amazing what you can accomplish if you give up housework.”

Welcome Guest Micheala Rhua!!

First of all, a huge THANK YOU for having me on your blog. I really appreciate your support!
Love Of Another Kind.
Mishaps and misdeeds often pave the way to a love filled future for the hero and heroine. Oh…err not in this case – heroine and heroine. Love comes in all shapes and sizes, what is one person’s desire is not another’s. One is not better than the other; it is just another kind of love. The same feelings and emotions rule the heart, the same need to belong, to fight to protect that which you hold dear.
I love the dynamics of an FF relationship. Raya and Amari have an intense attraction and powerful chemistry. There is the passion that ignites between them. Hot, fiery and desperate at times. The need to taste, possess and claim creates an emotional bond, which becomes stronger.

I will leave you with a little taste x

A quick pick up and a night of sex was just what Raya was looking for. Only meeting Amari set her insides on fire and she had to have more of this Indian beauty. Witches and shifters aren’t meant to bond only Raya and Amari can’t ignore the chemistry flowing between them. Trouble strikes the lovers when a past trauma hits Raya and Amari’s mother could be to blame. Finally Raya has a chance to get even with the old witch, who destroyed her life. When that revenge reveals that Raya’s past holds secrets she wasn’t aware of, it throws into question everything she believes in. Can the lovers unite to help Raya find her true self or is it all too late?

“Good morning Amari. Sorry I couldn’t wait,” Raya said. She pulled off her sneakers one by one, followed by her sports socks.
Amari held out her hand, inviting her across. Raya’s eyes lit up and she began to walk across the shallow water. Suddenly she stopped and looked down at her feet, confusion written across her face. Raya backed away, out of the water.
“You okay?”
“Err…yeah. Why don’t you come across here?” Raya suggested.
Amari did not hesitate, pulling up her dress to skip across the cool water, leaving her sandals behind. Once across, Raya grabbed her hand and pulled her into her. Both girls looked at each other. Raya’s deep green eyes shone back at Amari.
“You’re beautiful…” began Raya, but she was silenced by Amari who pulled Raya’s head down in a rough kiss. Instantly there was a connection, sparks of energy flew around them and Amari’s body began to heat up. Lips meshed and tongues played, dancing and teasing. Their hands explored and grabbed each other’s bodies to get closer, wanting no space between them.
Ray moaned into Amari’s mouth. Amari pulled away.
“Sorry, did I hurt you?”
“Are you kidding me?” Raya said, pulling her back into a kissing that almost hurt with the fierce passion that was behind it. Amari’s mouth sizzled against Raya’s; never had she experienced something this strong straight away. She pulled at Raya’s T-shirt, wanting nothing between them; skin on skin was her desire. Raya helped her out by holding her arms up and Amari pulled the T-shirt off. Underneath she wore a simple cotton bra that cradled her breasts. Amari slid off one strap and kissed the soft skin of her neck, then shoulder. She felt Raya’s hand massage the back of her head, keeping her in that position. So she likes to be kissed there. With a new lover, it was always a learning experience; what they liked and didn’t like was stored in your memory. She was enjoying learning about Raya. She pulled down one cup to reveal a perfect breast with an erect pink nipple. Raya wasted no time: she sucked it straight away and then used her teeth to bite gently. This released another moan from Raya’s lips. Amari smiled, looking up at Raya.
“You like a little pain?” Amari carried on sucking Raya’s breasts with gentle bites. She moved her hand down Raya’s front and edged it into her joggers and down to her panties, which to Amari’s delight were a little moist. She rubbed Raya’s mound, letting the tips of her fingers slide down further. Raya spread her legs a little; that meant Amari could reach further. Massaging that pussy was not enough, she wanted to taste. Amari grabbed Raya’s joggers, pulled them all the way down and then knelt at her feet.
Raya’s legs were long and toned, probably with all that jogging. Amari stroked them up and down, dragging her nails closer and closer to her bare pussy that glistened, inviting her to taste. Amari stepped back to look at Raya. She was amazing with flawless skin, breasts that fitted into Amari’s hands and topped off with her red hair that looked like it was fire when the sun caught it.
“Lie down, Raya.”
“No, I want you naked too,” Raya replied.
Amari hesitated for a moment, her hands shaking, because not everyone appreciated her fuller figure.
“Go on, let me see you.”
Amari took a deep breath and pulled her dress off. Raya’s mouth opened and her eyes deepened in color. Amari could feel heat emanating from Raya’s body; it was one of those gifts her mother said she possessed, reading people’s feelings. Sometimes that was through the colors that surrounded them or the energy in the air, this time it was through the warmth of Raya’s body that drifted to her and pulled her in.
“You are perfect, Amari.” Raya stepped towards her and stroked her shoulder. More warmth filled Amari as she felt Raya’s hands stroke her breasts, down her waist to her needy pussy.

Guest Blogger Allie Ritch!

Vampires. The very word conjures up sexy and delicious images for a paranormal romance lover. Pair those images with the writing of the talented Allie Ritch and you have a surefire hit. I’m very pleased to welcome Allie as she tells us a bit about her new release Drinking Partners (isn’t that a clever title?). Please show your love and comment today. I know you’ll want to read this one. I certainly do!

@AllieRitch’s Drinking Partners Puts The Bite Back In Romance

Thanks for having me at LL&L! I think it’s important that I be here today to warn readers about my paranormal romance, Vampire Territory 1: Drinking Partners. In fact, I think it’s my public duty. This is serious business. Readers, you should not read Drinking Partners if any of the following apply to you:

  1. You are offended by hot vampire sex. We’re talking heart pumping, fangs extended, mind-blowing multiple orgasms that are not for the prudish.
  1. You are anemic or have other cause for being outraged by blood drinking. Frankly, I think as humans we should be wary on principle, although I understand master vampires Alex and Lucas have instituted human-rights laws within their territories.
  1. You have a heart condition and need to avoid excitement and action. The gun play alone could give you palpitations, not to mention the one love scene when Lucas puts a hole in the drywall with his…never mind. Just take deep breaths and think of calm blue water.
  1. You have a reading addiction and for some strange reason wish to fight it. Once you start reading Drinking Partners, you may not be able to put it down.

You have been warned! Now you may read the blurb and excerpt below at your own risk.

Blurb: Being the master vampire for the Mid-Atlantic Territory is a tough job. Between the Human Rebellion trying to kill him with poisonous suicide donors and snobby born vampires bucking his authority, Lucas Thane has his hands full. What he needs is a regular drinking partner to feed from and a bigger power block. He finds both in the form of Alexandra Gage, the master of the territory south of his.

Alex could use a little help herself, but she has no intention of letting Lucas take over. Turned into a vampire against her will, she has had enough control taken from her. She’ll never let Lucas usurp her right to rule, but will she let him steal her heart? Passion ignites between them, and it’s amazing what vampire bodies can do.

Excerpt from Vampire Territory 1: Drinking Partners:

“You’re afraid of me.”

“I’m not stupid.” His statement pricked her pride and made her defensive. “I can see you’re powerful and cunning, and I find it hard to believe you came all this way to make friends.”

“Ah.” She got the feeling she went up in Lucas’s esteem. “You’re not entirely wrong. I came here to size you up.”

“If you’d been another Gyula Tavarius, I would have gone for your head already.”

“You assume you can beat me?” She wasn’t altogether certain he was wrong.

He tsked at her. “I’m not stupid, either. If I wanted to kill you, I’d at least use Zander as backup.”

“Two against one isn’t a fair fight.”

As he stared back at her through the cracked door, his eyes went flat. “I don’t fight fair. Not when lives are on the line.”

“Good to know.” That should have been her cue to get as far away from him as possible, but she couldn’t fault him for his honesty. “I’m nothing like Tavarius, so where does that leave me?”

“It leaves you whispering at me through the door. Not the usual behavior of a master vampire, but I haven’t made up my mind about you yet. I question your ability to rule here. As long as you keep hiding instead of publicly taking control, the others will continue to attack you and fight for power.”

But how could she take control when she was on her own? She was one against many.

Alex didn’t confess her doubts to him, though. “I thought I’d start by taking your suggestion and making an example of recent challengers.”

There was a long moment of silence—the first awkward pause she’d felt in her conversation with him.

She hesitated. “Do you plan to come back tomorrow night?”

“Do you want me to?” He watched her so closely she checked her hood again.

Although she worried about giving him too much influence, she was more concerned that he’d leave and never come back. “Yes.”

“Then I will, but only if we shake on it.” Lucas wore a challenging smirk as he held out his hand.

Alex stared at it as if it were a wire snare. If she took his hand, would he notice hers was small and feminine? Vampires didn’t get calluses, so it wasn’t as though her smooth skin would give her away. She had a strong urge to touch him, but there was another risk.

“Do you plan to grab hold and yank me out?”

He kept his hand where it was. “I don’t need to resort to tricks.”

“You already confessed you don’t fight fair.”

His grin broadened. “Ah, but we’re not fighting, are we? Where’s that trust we were working on?”

If he planned to hurt her, she supposed it was better to find out sooner rather than later.

Before she could lose her nerve, she thrust her hand through the crack in the door and pressed her palm to his. His fingers were warmer than she expected. A bolt of sensation traveled up her arm on contact. It made her cheeks flush and her nipples tighten, and she was pretty sure every hair on her body stood up at attention. She was glad she was hooded and mostly hidden behind the door, though he probably noticed her accelerated heartbeat.

Lucas tightened his fingers—a tease or a warning?—before he let go.

She jerked her hand back and cradled it against her chest. It still tingled.

“I’ll see you tomorrow night.” He dropped his voice so low she had to lean forward to hear him.

Alex caught herself and straightened her spine. “Tomorrow then, but come after midnight. I have an errand to run first.”

If she was lucky, she’d live through it and be here to see Lucas Thane again.

Guest Author Tina Whittle

Deeper Than the Grave official coverI am thrilled to have author Tina Whittle here today to celebrate her newest release in her Tai Randolph series, Deeper Than The Grave.  For those of you who have not read this series because it looks to be straight mystery, I’m here to tell you that it is also a romance series.  The romance between the two main characters, Tai Randolph, a woman who has inherited her uncle’s gun shop in Kinnesaw, Georgia, and Trey Seaver, a security expert and formerly Atlanta PD SWAT. is one of the best romantic couplings in fiction.

Tina has graciously agreed to share with us how Tai and Trey came to be.

Moni: Let’s get this out of the way. Your publisher promotes this as a mystery and if we were to get specific, it would be categorized as “amateur sleuth”, but you really don’t mind it being called romantic, right? Did you intentionally set out to write a romantic arc in Tai’s stories?

Tina: I am so happy when people call it romantic (especially people like you, Moni, because you know a thing or two about the subject!). Granted, the plot arc of each book is a self-contained traditional mystery with a whodunit and suspects, all that mystery stuff. But for me, the heart of the series is the heart of my narrator, Tai Randolph. She’s smart, assertive, and not afraid of going after what she wants, and from the second Trey Seaver appears on the scene, she wants him. Bad. And she gets him. He’s much more complicated than his surface suggests, however, and her greatest challenge is coming into relationship not only with Trey and all the twisty stuff under his cool Armani exterior, but with her own identity. I’m not writing a “will they or won’t they?” story or a love triangle. Other writers plumb that territory with much effectiveness. I’m writing a relationship, with all its challenges and joys and pain and growth. And Tai is the voice of it.

Moni: Now, I’ve always seen Tai as two main things – she’s a puzzle solver and an instigator, a catalyst, if you will. I see both of those traits as part of her initial attraction to Trey – those and the fact that she recognizes loneliness and isolation when she sees it, because she often feels that way. Trey is a puzzle she wishes to solve and her need to figure him out triggers an awakening in him that evolves over the following books. Am I wrong?

Tina: You are spot on, Moni – gold star for you! Tai gets restless without a challenge, which makes her an excellent amateur sleuth, but it also makes someone like Trey irresistible – all those layers and shadows and secrets. Eventually she realizes that she misjudged him from the start, that what she took for bored sophistication was actually profound confusion. And yes, a deep heartbreaking loneliness. I think she and I became aware of that loneliness at the same time, in a scene from the first book where he has driven her home, and before she gets out of his Ferrari, it hits her with a pang how singular and alone he really is. She says, “He was separated from me by a gulf far wider than a few feet of leather upholstery. I watched him drive away and thought of empty spaces. But I also thought of bridges.” [Moni:  I loved that scene and Tai’s thoughts in it. Sigh.]

I figured something else out during this scene, that even though Trey seems as courteous and disengaged as ever, Tai’s full-hearted acceptance of him, her refusal to be bullied or coaxed or convinced to leave him alone because he’s so damaged and dangerous (which is what everyone who knows him keeps telling her) has worked on him. The next morning there is a slightly different Trey on the scene; I like your word “awakening.” Yes, he’s blinking into the light of some new feelings the next morning, quite perplexed but utterly intrigued in return.

Moni: Trey has a tragic past. And his friends and acquaintances use that past to pigeon-hole him as a victim and something less than what he was. Tai doesn’t – she sees his potential at becoming a new Trey. I found that very sexy. Is this why Trey falls in love with her?

Tina: This is one of my favorite Tai qualities – her acceptance of people as they are, shine and rust all together. While other people tiptoe around Trey’s past tragedy and present psychological and cognitive challenges, Tai is very matter-of-fact and honestly curious. I think she understands that we are all on the cusp of becoming someone new, that identity is always fluid and dynamic. And while everyone else mourns the Trey-Who-Was, Tai accepts the Trey-Who-Is . And that acceptance makes it easier for Trey to accept who he is too . . . because there’s really only one Trey, after all. Befuddled Trey, Tender Trey, Controlling Trey, and Hot-Blooded Trey . . . they’re all the same man. Tai loves the whole of him, and the whole of him responds in kind. [Moni:  Um, can I say — I love Trey very, very much. But you knew that. :)]

Moni: Okay, I love your tight writing style. You can convey more in one simple sentence and action tag than many authors can in pages and pages. After the first book, the paragraphs in each of the next three (and I am not counting the short stories which supplement the books) are simple short, terse, and filled with undercurrents:

Darker Than Any Shadow, #2: “Be still,” he said, his mouth at my ear.

Blood, Ash & Bone, #3: “Do it again,” he said.

Deeper Than the Grave, #4: Trey’s mouth was at my ear, his chest solid against my back. “Slowly.”

Okay, I don’t know about anybody else, but after what I read in the first book, those lines are suggestive and sexy. The readers of this blog will have to read the books to see what each short terse paragraph leads to, but I just get chills at the idea Trey is touching Tai and speaking to her that commanding way. Please tell me you did this on purpose.

Tina: Thank you, Moni! That means a lot coming from you. And yes, I do my best to capture Trey’s physicality, the way he inhabits his body with a visceral awareness. He’s a former SWAT team leader, and even though he’s very polite and soft-spoken, he still has a strong command presence, which is how cops describe using one’s body and tone of voice to maintain control of a situation. Words don’t always come easily to him – he is very much a show-don’t-tell guy – but he understands muscle and sinew and skin. He understands sensation and response. Combine that quality with his almost supernatural ability to focus, and you’ve got a man who can make even a force of nature like Tai weak in the knees, even during the most mundane of activities. Tai gets hot and bothered watching him sketch floor plans at his desk. And I gotta admit, so do I. [Moni:  Me, too.]

This is one reason I enjoy writing two very sensual people who are also in love – their intimacy, which gets deeper every book, is most obvious in the permissions they grant each other with their bodies. Trey is a highly trained close combat fighter – he keeps a boundary around himself at all times, and people who trespass, even accidentally, are likely to find themselves flat on the ground in the suspect prone position. Tai, however, has earned an all-access pass. Which means that even the tiniest gesture between them is ripe with connection. And to me, there’s nothing sexier than that level of trust. It’s been interesting to watch it develop from the first book – when Trey was very guarded, very reserved – to this fourth book, where they’ve created a give-and-take energy that infuses their entire relationship, whether in bed or on the training mat or at a stakeout. Words sometimes fail them, but touch never does.

Moni: Trey recreated a world he could function in after a traumatic brain injury. He pulled his new world of grays, blacks, and whites from an Italian issue of GQ. The English major in me sees the symbolism in those choices – his psychological affect is things are black and white, yes and no, right and wrong. His world has become choices and shades of gray. So, he picks a red dress out for Tai to wear to what becomes a climactic scene in the first book. Why red? Or am I reading too much into why he chooses at that point in time to shift his worldview from black, white and gray?

Tina: Full disclosure – I’m an English major too, so I love the language of symbols. I love the texture they weave into a narrative. That said, I am very careful to let them develop organically, from my characters’ choices, and not from my own writerly fascination with imagery. So yes, the color red, especially that first red dress and other red clothing, are recurring symbols . . . only I didn’t figure that out until I finished writing the book. And I didn’t figure out that it was a symbol running through all the books until you pointed it out.

But when I looked back, I noticed that at almost every crucial point where Trey has to step out of his comfort zone and meet Tai on untested ground, she’s wearing something red. Sometimes it’s a haute couture cocktail dress. Sometimes it’s flame-red La Perla lingerie. But it always represents a vibrancy that he’s had a hard time finding within himself, a spark that Tai kindles with her presence. Since then, I’ve noticed lots of red around her – her cherry-red Camaro, her very private vixen-fox tattoo – and even though Trey still keeps his apartment and his wardrobe in dichromatic black and white, there’s a warmth inside him now. Like the Phoenix that symbolizes Atlanta (where the books are set), Trey too has been reborn from ashes. I can’t wait to see what slow-burning ember Tai manages to fan to flame next.

Moni: When Tai first meets Trey he is involved with Gabriella, his physical therapist and sometime lover. Tai doesn’t hate Gabriella, but she sure as hell doesn’t like the woman’s relationship with Trey. I see their relationship as “détente.” Will there be some cat fight in these ladies’ future?

Tina: I’m writing that cat fight right now, for the 5th book – it’s long overdue. Tai thinks Gabriella is a fancy French nut job who might want back in Trey’s bed. Gabriella thinks Tai is a reckless dilettante who doesn’t think twice about dragging Trey into danger.

But I find myself with equal sympathy for all three people involved in this conflict. I like Gabriella; she’s known Trey for over five years, before and after his accident, and while they were lovers for most of that time (until Tai showed up) they weren’t an exclusive couple because Gabriella could never be fully satisfied with only one lover. Trey, however, is a one-woman man in both temperament and practice – they were incompatible from the start, but truly cared about each other, and still do. After his accident, she used her skills as a massage therapist and herbalist to help him recover. The care she provides is a necessary part of Trey’s continuing recovery, but she can be over-protective and over-involved. She cares for Tai too, and is very happy to see Trey thriving in his relationship . . . but she’s ever-vigilant.

Tai has tolerated this dynamic even if she hasn’t liked it because she understands the backstory, the history that Trey and Gabriella share. Since they share a common goal – Trey’s best interest – the two women have gotten along pretty well for four books, but now the claws are out. And since they are both fierce, no-holds-barred fighters, the battle is gonna get savage, I suspect. [Moni:  My money’s on Tai.]

Moni: After The Dangerous Edge of Things came out, you posted on your web site what you’d originally intended to be a last chapter in the book – you called it “U-Turns and Other Tricky Maneuvers.” First, I want to thank you for doing that – the novel had ended rather abruptly and while my vivid imagination could fill in what happened next – as a romance reader and author, I loved the scene. Do you plan to continue to offer such extra looks into Tai and Trey’s burgeoning romance?

Tina: Oh, absolutely! I enjoy writing their love scenes very much – there’s no better character study than getting two people into the bedroom – but I’ll tell you a writerly secret. I adore Tai and Trey, but I do tend to throw monkey wrenches into their happily-ever-after. Lots of corpses and conspiracies, killers and complications. Tai rolls up her sleeves and deals with whatever I dish out, but Trey will literally walk off the page and not come back if the conflict gets too heavy. So I coax him back with a lovely little sexual rendezvous here, a torrid session on his desk at work there. And then he’s more cooperative.

Even though I wrote these scenes for my eyes only, I decided that I would share these little snippets and stories with my readers. Tai and Trey’s bedroom scenes often get left out of the final edition of the book because of genre constraints, but for readers who have been following their relationship, these glimpses into the intimate parts of their lives are an important part of the overall arc of the series. I’m working now on a short story set at a romance writer convention – the working title is “Fifty Shades of Trey.” I promise to share it when I’m done.

Moni: I liken your Tai Randolph series romance arc to what J.D. Robb did in her In Death series: Each book has a good mystery, great secondary characters, and the romantic relationship between the H/H continues to evolve into an even stronger and more beautiful relationship. Please tell me that Tai and Trey’s romance will continue as they are thrown into solving mysterious deaths thrown in their paths.

Tina: I certainly hope so! They make great sleuthing partners because they make great romantic partners, very complementary in their strengths and skills and aptitudes. Of course there are challenges both in and out of bed – Tai is impulsive, emotionally-driven and intuitive, while Trey is cool, calculating, and intellectual – but they are learning to cooperate, stretch beyond their respective boundaries, and support each other in their vulnerabilities. But even when they fight – which they do – they tend to channel that friction into other intriguingly combustible activities.

Moni: Is there anything else you’d like to share with the readers today?

Tina: If anyone would like to learn more about the series, or about Tai and Trey, they can visit my website (where I have several of those extra stories and scenes posted in the Other Writing section) There you’ll find my blog, my schedule of appearances, and all the different ways I hang out in the social media world, including Facebook and Twitter You can also check out my various Pinterest boards, including Trey and Tai’s Accessories, Trey and Tai’s Atlanta (which includes an interactive map), and Cast of Characters (which features some awesome shots of actor Dylan Bruce without his shirt because I find that inspiring). And if you’re into music, you can listen to Tai and Trey’s Playlist on Spotify.

Moni: Thanks for being here and discussing Tai and Trey. Oh and I love the excerpt you provided for Deeper Than the Grave – it is so Trey. Love him. Love you and your writing.

Tina: Thank you so much for having me! You’re the kind of reader every writer dreams about, and I wish you all the best with your own work.

It’s taken almost a year, but Tai Randolph finally has her new life together. She’s running a semi-successful Atlanta gun shop catering to Civil War re-enactors. Her relationship with the sexy if somewhat security-obsessed Trey Seaver is going smoothly. Most importantly, there’s not a single corpse on her horizon, and her previously haphazard existence is finally stable, secure . . . and utterly unsurprising.

Then a tornado scatters the skeletal remains of a Confederate hero, and Tai is asked to assist with the recovery effort. It’s a job her late Uncle Dexter would have relished, as does Tai, especially when she discovers a jumble of bones in the Kennesaw Mountain underbrush.

Her problem? The skeleton doesn’t belong to the missing soldier. Tai’s discovery reveals a more recent murder, with her deceased uncle leading the suspect list. As Tai struggles to clear Dexter’s name — and save the shop he left her — she digs up more than old bones. Deadly secrets also lie buried in the red Georgia clay.

Tai realizes there’s a murderer on the loose, a clever killer who has tried to conceal the crimes of the present in the stories of the past. As she risks her own life to unravel two mysteries — one from a previous century, one literally at her doorstep — Tai rediscovers her dangerous taste for murder and mayhem.

Will she and Trey survive yet another foray into amateur sleuthing? Or will the Civil War add two modern-day casualties to its death toll?

I burrowed under his coat, wrapping my arms around his waist, pressing myself into the circle of his warmth. He uncrossed his arms to let me in, but that was his only response. If I wanted a goodnight kiss, I’d have to take it. As usual.

I looked him in the eye. “Trey Seaver, what do I have to do to get you to make a move on me?”

He blinked in confusion. “I’m sorry, what?”

“You know. A move. A pass. Something—anything—that will end with us having sex.”

He cocked his head. “Are you asking me to seduce you?”

“Yep. That’s it. Got it in one.”

“Oh. Okay. I can do that.” He leaned back against the car, pondering. “I’ll need your help, of course. Because you’re somewhat difficult to seduce.”

I resisted the urge to thump him between the eyes. “You’ve got to be kidding. You’ve never even tried, you jackass.”

His eyes flashed. “I’ve never had the chance. You’re very . . . I need a word, multisyllabic, starts with A.”

He shook his head.

“Fast. You’re very fast.”

I glared at him. “Fast doesn’t start with A.”

“Nonetheless.” He looked down at his shoes, a slight flush running warm along his cheekbones. “Fast isn’t a bad thing, of course. I like fast. But I’m . . .”

“Not slow.” He raised his head. “Just less fast.”

I caught his scent then—subtle, as always, carried on body heat and proximity, the mixture of that evergreen aftershave and the musk of skin. My fingers itched as I remembered the muscles camouflaged under the sleek Armani suit, the sure touch of his hands, the intense pleasure he could deliver . . .

I move my mouth closer to his. “I could take you now if I wanted.”

“I know.”

“Right up against this Ferrari. You wouldn’t put up any resistance whatsoever.”

“None at all. But that would hardly count as a seduction on my part, now would it?”

I almost caved. The pull of him was gravitational, like planets circling into suns, ever closer, as reckless and heedless as physics. It was science, chemicals and laws and rules, and all I had to do was kiss him, and he’d kiss me back, and the chain reaction would begin . . .

I forced myself to take one step backwards. “There. That’s me being less fast.”

He watched me. Considered long and hard. Then he got in the car, leaving me standing alone in the freezing solitary night. He started to close the door, but I stopped it with my hand.

“What the hell, Trey?”

He looked up at me. “What?”

“That’s it?”

He nodded. “For now.”

“Are you serious?”

“Of course I’m serious.”

He said it calmly, softly. But his eyes gleamed, even in the low light. Yes, he was serious—he was always serious. But this was a new kind of serious.

I leaned forward into the car. “Trey. Boyfriend of mine. I don’t know what you think seduction is, but this isn’t it.”

I saw the quirk at the corner of his mouth, and a fresh desire flooded me like sap in the springtime, especially when the quirk deepened into one of his rare crooked smiles. He kept his eyes on me as he started the Ferrari, all four hundred horses under its hood leaping and snorting in a growly eight-liter rumble somewhere close to ninety decibels.

“Of course it is,” he said.

Moni: And it’s tightly written, sexy, teasing scenes like the one above that has me coming back for more Tai and Trey.  And when Trey lets loose, well, let’s just say, I want my very own Trey Seaver, all to myself.

Guest blogger Karyn Gerrard!

It’s a great pleasure for me to welcome fellow Canadian and romance author Karyn Gerrard. She always has a lot on the go, including her hot stories and active blogging, so I’m thrilled she could spend some time with us today. Welcome, Karyn!

Thanks to Love, Lust and Laptops for having me! This book is a big step in a new direction for me, as it is a category, contemporary romance that is not erotic, the heat level is sensual. Also its one of my longer pieces at 60,000 words. It is also book 2 in the Wicked Men of Rockland series, so it is also my first detailed series that will feature multiple characters and overlaying plots.

I started out writing short stories and novellas, and I always believed writing is a learning experience. I have certainly learned a lot along the way and am eager to learn more. I want to write at various heat levels and have more characters and intricate plots going forward.

Though a voracious reader, I only came to romance about 8 years ago when I picked up a second hand copy of a Mary Balogh historical at a yard sale. I haven’t looked back. Never dreamed I would be published, and am still in shock my first submission was accepted back in 2011.

Romance books are escapism, taking us away for a while from the complications of real life, but they also show us the importance of emotion, love and sex in our lives. I love reading and writing romance and hope to continue!

BLURB: It took just one teasing wink and a sexy Irish lilt from bad boy Lorcan Byrne to turn Julie Denison’s world upside down. The problem is, he’s only in town for six months, and happily ever after isn’t in this world traveler’s vocabulary.

Julie’s worked hard to get her life in a good place—dropping substantial weight and getting a great job at her friend’s bakery. But this handsome charmer is just as tempting as any of the decadent pastries she sells, and she can’t resist his advances for long. Julie fully expects Lorcan to break her heart—but she’s planning to enjoy every second she can of their explosive chemistry.
After years of danger as a soldier and a spy, Lorcan fled to tiny Rockland, Maryland for some boring downtime. He didn’t count on meeting someone who could ignite his libido and soothe his damaged heart, and their passion soon leads to deeper feelings. But can Julie convince Lorcan he has more to offer her than just his wicked Celtic kiss?
Sensuality Level: Sensual

“Julie. You look beautiful,” he whispered with awe. The smile slid from her face and her lip trembled. Oh, damn. What did I say? He wasn’t lying. He held out his hand, she took it and stood. “You’ve done your hair. Like ribbons of golden sun.” He dropped her hand and stepped close so her breasts brushed against his chest. He bit back a groan, then framed her face and stroked her flushed cheeks with his thumbs. A sheen of moisture glittered in her beautiful eyes. “Brings out those adorable gold flecks in your lovely eyes, darlin’.”

“Thank you,” she murmured.

Her vulnerable response touched him in a deep uncharted area of his heart. He lowered his head and tilted her face up. “I’ve been aching to do this since that night at the pub. Indulge me. Only a taste.”

His lips barely touched hers, but it sent roaring heat to all parts of his body. Lorcan suddenly had a vision of sprawling her across the counter and plunging himself into her feminine heat. Where did that come from? Just from an innocent kiss? He didn’t dare suckle those lips any more or he’d lose all control. He stepped back. Julie’s eyes were closed and her lips still slightly puckered. A slight whimper of protest came from her when he moved away.

“Thank you,” she whispered.

Lorcan smiled broadly. “You’re welcome. You’d best prepare yourself, Julie.

Whenever we find ourselves alone like this, I will be kissing you. You’ll never know when it’s coming or just how wicked it will be.”

Her eyes snapped opened. “Wicked?”

“Aye, I’ve been told I’ve a wicked kiss.” He winked at her. “Shall we head out? Nick recommended this place so if it’s no bloody good, we can blame him.”

Julie smiled and nodded. He took her hand. Simmering flame, bloody hell.

Guest Blog: Margaret Etheridge

Happy Saturday, my darlings! Parker here. I’m excited to have one of my dearest writing buddies with us today. Margaret Etheridge (or Mags, as I call her) is here to tell you about her new boxed set – Enchanted Lover – and to talk about food. *le sigh* I do love this woman. 🙂 Y’all please give Margaret a warm Love, Love and Laptops welcome!

Comfort food

It’s fall, the season for all my favorite things – warm days, cool nights, college football (Go Hogs!) and comfort food!

Pot roast, chicken and dumplings, homemade vegetable soup… I love it all. There’s nothing better than a pot of chili simmering in the stove on a cold, wet day. When I know I’m going to be stuck inside, I like to bake Toll House cookies so I know I’ll be properly supplied for the duration. If I’m feeling under the weather I need Campbell’s Chicken Noodle soup and a peanut butter sandwich.

I’m a Catholic school survivor, so in my mind, Kraft Macaroni ‘n Cheese should be served on Fridays with tuna casserole. The kind with the crushed potato chips on top.

In my book, Paramour, Camellia Stafford’s neighbor, Mrs. Kelly, expresses her condolences in a most time honored way. She presents the bereaved with a Corning Ware dish filled with tuna-noodle casserole. Later, Cam invites sexy ad man, Brad, to her apartment and seduces him with meatloaf and mashed potatoes. What man could resist?

We’re all susceptible to the lure of comfort food. My personal favorite? Toast – the perfect food for all occasions. When I’m anxious, I take it plain and dry. Feeling cozy? I slather that toasty goodness in real butter. You know I’m celebrating when I break out the cinnamon and sugar.
How about you? What’s your go-to food when you need a little solace?
