I’m Not Gonna Blog About #Cockygate…Okay, Yes, I Am

So #cockygate exploded on Twitter before I had a chance to come up with a post for this week’s blog. And it’s still going strong now that I’m down to the wire and have to get something up for you all to read. Oh, the self-imposed deadlines!

I thought about discussing something entirely different, but I was worried it would get lost in all the drama. Okay, and I couldn’t really think of anything else.

So let’s talk #cockygate.

I’m not going to give you a recap because you already know what’s going on. And if you don’t, climb out from under your rock and check out the hashtag on Twitter. But be prepared to get sucked in for a few hours. Not exaggerating. I also recommend checking out the hashtag if you really do have time to kill because in amongst all the anger and shock and frustration are some pretty hilarious gems. The creativity of some of these tweets tells me there are lots of talented people affected by this drama.

I’m not going to bash the author because, um, that’s well and truly taken care of, and that’s not my M.O. anyway. I prefer to make fun of a situation. Actually, I prefer to stay out of bullshit like this altogether but this time, I couldn’t. Not unlike the entirety of the romance community, it appears.

I’m not going to blather on about the legality of it all, because I’m not a lawyer (although I hear a writer who is a lawyer has gotten involved, which, if it must happen at all, is pretty damn cool) and I don’t honestly know. It doesn’t seem like someone could trademark a common word and refuse to let other people use it in a country where freedom of speech is taken to some pretty crazy extremes, but hey, I don’t work at the trademark office. And if whomever does work there made a colossal mistake and accidentally gave this person the right to trademark something they shouldn’t have, well, I’m really glad I don’t work there.

What I am going to do is unabashedly promote a friend’s book because, 1) it has the word ‘cocky’ in the title. And 2) she didn’t copy her work from that other author, who I’m pretty sure she didn’t know existed until this past weekend. And 3) it’s a really good book. Not just because of the cool title, but because she’s a really good writer. I know this because I’ve read everything she’s ever put out, oh, and I happen to co-write with her, too. Heard of my Sexy Bad series?

What? You haven’t? Well, go check out the website, I’ll wait: https://sexybadbooks.com/.

Hey, welcome back! So yeah, Misti Murphy is the other half of that writing duo, and she has a few books of her own and they’re all quite good. And while I think you should read every single one, I want to especially call out the cockiest one of them all:

A Well Paired Novel by Marianne Rice

Hey, it’s Tami Lund here, posting on an off-day. But it’s worth it! You see, I’m helping a friend celebrate the release of her latest book.

And it’s about wine. Well, it’s romance, of course, but the series is called Well Paired, and how totally irresistible is that??

Oh yeah, and it released on my birthday (which was last week!).

So you can see why I had to share, right?

Anyway, here are the deets, and an excerpt to whet your appetite…

Book Title: At First Blush

At First Blush - Marianne Rice

Series: A Well Paired Novel
Genre: Romantic Women’s Fiction
Date of release: 1/23/2018

Book Blurb:

Alexis Le Blanc enjoys her simple life in Crystal Cove, Maine. After taking a chance on romance and getting rejected, she has given up on love. Now she devotes all her time to running her family’s winery, Coastal Vines. She wants to keep it small and traditional, but her parents have other ideas—hence why they hire some big-shot marketing executive from Napa Valley to rev up business.

When Benito Martelli shows up in her family’s tasting room, she’s more than stunned to discover he’s the man who wined and dined her the night before. Alexis is beyond peeved at his deception in trying to get into her good graces for the sake of making money on her winery. At first, she wants nothing to do with him or his big business ideas, but she’s pleasantly surprised when they come to a compromise, and even more surprised when she gives in to the sparks between them.

Unfortunately, things don’t go quite as planned and Alexis is faced with complications she never could have predicted. Promises and secrets unravel, and she must decide if love and wine are as well paired as she hoped.

EXCERPT:

“You want brutal honesty?”

“That would be nice. For once.”

Ben grabbed the collar of her jacket and jerked her toward him, their faces inches apart. “I want you. In my bed. Underneath me. On top of me. But I also don’t want to hurt you. I’m letting you go because I don’t want to be a selfish bastard. There are things you don’t know…”

“I seem to go for selfish bastards so…” She licked her lips, hoping for one more kiss. Hoping he’d ask her to stay. Hoping he’d let her go.

“You’re too…special.”

“I’m not special.” Alexis lowered her eyes and shook her head. More lies to get her into bed. Only he didn’t want her in his bed. Her mind raced searching for answers, yet she didn’t even know the questions. It was all too much.

The way her heart raced when he was near. The way her legs trembled when his dimple appeared as if just for her. The way her mind went dizzy with longing when his stunning eyes were so intently focused on her.

“See, and then you do that vulnerable thing and I just want to…”

A spark ignited inside. She was not weak. “I’m not vulnerable.” She lifted her gaze to his and studied the intensity in his eyes, the seriousness in his jaw.

“I like that you are, and that you think you aren’t.”

“I think I should go.” She was smart enough and strong enough to walk away before she’d get emotionally attached and have her heart broken.

“I’ll follow you home.”

“When was the last time you drove in the snow?” Ben didn’t reply, his gaze still on her lips. “I didn’t think so. I don’t want to have to haul your ass out of a ditch so stay here. Play on your laptop. Style your hair. Go be sexy. Whatever it is you do at night.”

Alexis frowned when she pulled away from him so easily, and let herself out, driving home in silence and confusion.

Leaving her hot and horny and alone on a cold night, Ben was right about one thing. He was a total selfish bastard.

Happy New Year!

Whip Daniels watched the diminutive woman with the long, platinum blonde hair unload the van from his position behind the bar. Over the long years he had been here, waiting, he had watched many different people come and go. Sometimes a group of teenagers would break in, looking for a place to hang out, smoke pot and screw. Those trespassing apparently loved having a place away from everything, where no one would catch them playing their drinking games, pin the tail on the whatever, and strip poker.

Ah, poker. It would be so nice to be able to play a good game of poker. He had been an excellent player.

He had listened in on the conversations, and over the years had become accustomed to the various generations that passed through the building. He hated the hippies, though; once they were high, some could really see him and tried to have conversations with him.

It didn’t work. He was someone who could only watch reality and not be a part of it. It was a never-ending lifetime of floating around and watching people break in with food and booze. He enjoyed the aroma of their never-ending cheeseburgers, fries, and s’mores. He watched couples have sex and heard their moans of passion, and he missed his woman badly. He desperately wanted to touch her again, see her again; yet he knew she was far out of reach, unaware of his existence. It was a special kind of hell.

He returned his attention to the little blonde. She scurried around the van, loading her arms with more supplies to bring in. He knew what she was doing; over the years various brave souls had tried to spend the night and “test” for ghostly activity so he recognized some of the equipment.

The woman hustled back and forth between the van and the saloon, dropping off her boxes, bending and stooping, t-shirt molded to her perfect breasts, jeans painted on her ass…her delicious ass…his cock stiffened.

He floated around to the front and watched her close the van doors with her foot while she juggled the final boxes in her arms.

Finally, she finished and sat down to rest for a moment.

It was about time she got here—he had almost given up on her.

He looked down at his erection. Wonder if she had a machine to measure that.

FBI at My Door – Again

If you’ve never had the FBI ring your doorbell, thank your lucky stars. I’ve met with them several times while being investigated and now I worry that they are going to seize my computer and flash drives, based on my Internet search history.

uncaged-love-highres

Yes, I have reason to worry. While writing Uncaged Love, I was researching explosives (you could have guessed that one, huh) and downloading maps of Colombia for that book. At the same time I was trying to find the best way to blow up a Cessna jet for a different book. I also had SEAL websites open and was also trying to determine the ten largest cities in the U.S.A. (Getting the picture here?)

I’m sure my name pinged somewhere in the bowels of the J. Edgar Hoover Building in D.C. and they pulled up my real name and thick file. When the lowly tech looked at it, he probably laughed, counted the number of guns I own, shook his head and refiled it so he could go find a real bad guy. At least I hope that’s what happened.

Before I continue, I need to tell you a little about myself. I went to college intending to be a Navy public affairs officer upon graduation so I was in NROTC. That’s when I met my first FBI agent up close and personal. To become a military officer, you must be investigated and vetted. All I remember about that encounter was how scared I was as a seventeen-year-old from a tiny town in upstate New York and how I hoped my four, vindictive brothers wouldn’t say anything to jeopardize my chances for the secret clearance I needed.

Four years later, I was a lot smarter. The Navy had cancelled my contract as part of the post-Vietnam drawdown, I was engaged to Macho Marine and they were investigating him, not me. I smiled sweetly and answered all the agent’s questions while trying desperately not to drool. He was freaking hot. He had a face that belonged on magazine covers and a body sculpted by hours in the gym. To top it off, he was a nice guy and only a few years older than me. We joked and talked casually long after the official questioning was completed.

Fast forward through several MM promotions and at least two more FBI vetting procedures. By that time I was getting good at this whole interrogation thing.

I owned an advertising and public relations agency in southern Georgia. My business had grown through word of mouth so when a plantation owner introduced me to his Georgia Tech roommate, I thought nothing of it.

The man was from Colombia, an Olympian shooter, and was very serious about his growing import-export business. He was trying to help the people in his country by importing generators since electricity was rare and unstable if available. He exported flowers, primarily to the U.S.A.

SIDEBAR – I used these ideas in Uncaged Love. The book takes place in Colombia and my villain was once idealistic about changing the agricultural focus of the country.

The new client wanted me to come to Colombia and oversee the photo and video shoot for the promotional materials for his side business; an exclusive trip for high-end sportsmen that included a dove hunt, deep sea fishing and mountain stream fly fishing. I’d negotiated in a personal side trip to the emerald mines and a few days at a beach resort on the Caribbean Sea. Sounded like the prefect trip to me.

Macho Marine already had orders for our next move which required a higher level of security, beyond his current top secret clearance.

Enter the FBI once again.

When the cordial agent, who was obviously nearing retirement, asked us if we had plans to travel outside the U.S.A., I excitedly told him about my planned trip to Colombia. He closed his little black notebook and stood. Shaking his head, he announced, “If she goes to Colombia, you’ll never get this clearance and you’ll never be promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. Your career will end.”

Needless to say, I never made it to Colombia, but it’s on my bucket list.

As I researched the country for Uncaged Love, many of the sites and cities I’d planned to visit all those years ago came back to me. Although economically and politically the country is much more stabilized than it was, it’s still a dangerous place.

BLURB:

The jungle isn’t the only thing that’s hot while escaping a Colombian cartel.

ATF Special Agent Harper Tambini is kidnapped by a Colombian drug lord and forced to use her explosives knowledge to kill his competition before she can escape with the help of undercover CIA agent Rafe Silva. As they make their way through the rivers, mountains and jungles, their desire for each other detonates. But Harper reminds Rafe of his murdered fiancée, and the shadow world he wants to leave. Harper learned the hard way that men never stay, so now she doesn’t keep them around long enough to see if the sparks can light a fire that will last forever. In their short time together, can they crystalize a relationship, or will it all blow up?

Sara Daniel’s Perfect Valentine’s Day Fudge @SSaraDaniel

Tomorrow is February, the month when romantics, conformists, and panicked spouses all converge on florists and chocolate shops. If you live in the northern two-thirds of the northern hemisphere, by all means, buy your loved one some flowers. (Nothing’s going to grow in my tundra of a front yard any time soon!) However, for a personal touch, step away from the candy aisle and pick up the kitchen spatula to make that special someone a pan of homemade fudge.

February Fudge

7 oz marshmallow creme
1½ cups sugar
⅔ cup evaporated milk
¼ cup butter
¼ tsp. salt
2 cups milk chocolate chips
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 tsp. vanilla

Combine marshmallow creme, sugar, evaporated milk, butter and salt in a saucepan. Stirring constantly, bring to a full rolling boil over medium heat. Boil for 5 minutes, still stirring constantly. Remove from heat.

Add both kinds of chocolate chips and stir until chips are melted and mixture is smooth. Stir in vanilla.

Pour in foil-lined 8X8 pan. Chill until firm, roughly 2 hours. Makes 2½ pounds.

From the basic recipe, you can add caramel, pecans, peanut butter and more, depending on your loved one’s preference. Using a cookie cookies, you can even cut the fudge into hearts or pour it into heart-shaped bread or muffin/cookie tins while it is still warm. Make your fudge as unique as you are to delight your significant other and infuse decadent sweetness into your love life.

Here’s a little from my fun release that shows how much I loved playing with the Brothers Grimm. Hope you like it.

Before Armina Keer can have the baby she dreams of, she needs her estranged husband Ian to sign their divorce papers. Putting everything on the line for a second chance, Ian must convince her their love is worth saving, and Armina must decide if love is worth sacrificing her dreams.

Ian Keer might not deserve a second chance with his wife, but he’s not going to give up one either, not with the immediate flaming attraction still between them. While her uncles’ antics wreak havoc on life at The Inn, he offers her the ultimate gamble: Spend the night with him, and afterwards he’ll sign the papers if she still wants to leave.

With everything riding on one night together, Ian must convince her that their love is strong enough the second time around, and Armina must decide if love is worth sacrificing her dreams.

“You hate me,” Ian whispered, feeling more nauseous than if he’d ingested a prosthetic eyeball. How could she not hate him when she believed their personal relationship had meant less to him than an employment issue?

Armina gazed beyond his left shoulder. “I don’t hate you. I’ve never hated you. When we got married, I understood you had a strong work ethic combined with an unusual drive to succeed and a consuming passion for the Inn. I knew I’d come in second to this place.”

He opened his mouth, wanting to argue, but couldn’t. If she’d made him choose, he wouldn’t have picked her.

I thought I was okay with it,” she continued. “After all, I loved the Inn, too, and wanted you to realize your vision for it. Turns out I wasn’t okay. I didn’t realize how distant second place actually was.” She shrugged her slim shoulders. “Live and learn, right?”

Not right. He wanted to take back the lesson and teach her about real love instead. “You never should have had to settle for second place. With me or with anyone else. No one has the right to ask that of you.”

“Agreed.” Her voice came out stronger, her shoulders squared, and she looked him directly in the eye. “Now you understand why I want a divorce.”

Happy Birthday!

christmas-in-cancun-highresWith December 1st a sunrise away, I want to celebrate the second birthday of my second book with all of the wonderful readers who have made my career possible. On December 1, 2014 Christmas in Cancun hit the Internet via multiple e-book retailers.

In case you haven’t read Christmas in Cancun, here’s the blurb:

Busy building a new career with his catamaran company, former SEAL Jack Girard had all but forgotten about his grandfather’s quest to find the golden Mayan goddess statues until his brother’s beautiful widow, Jillian, and adorable daughter, Addison, arrive in Cancun with the research materials. His need to complete the family quest is almost as strong as his desire for Jillian.

Between raising her daughter alone and finishing her doctorate in Mayan anthropology, Jillian doesn’t have time for a man in her life. Although, after mourning her husband’s murder for two years, she’s ready for a man her bed.

virgin_mary_subaquatica_by_holophite-d4d7cr4An underwater Virgin Mary statue and centuries-old manuscripts lead the two of them through the Mayan Riviera and directly into danger.

During steamy Caribbean nights together, will they develop the ability to move on and discover the real treasure isn’t gold?

And a few teasers:

  • “Jack, it’s nice to finally meet you. Ji…Jimmy spoke of you often.” She hated when she stuttered over his name, but she’d said it so seldom in the past two years. The initial pain she’d felt every day, the loneliness every night, had quickly been replaced with exhaustion and work. Every now and again, it would catch her off guard. Like now.
  • Jack Girard was all man, more man than she could stand to be around. He was walled by a force field of male testosterone, and she wasn’t comfortable around men to begin with, but this man…well, she gulped hard. He flat-out made her nervous.
  • His brother.   Dead.   Nothing left but ashes and memories. He closed his eyes to hold in the water that threatened to leak. He couldn’t cry. He had been a f***ing Navy SEAL. Every part of his body had been tested from his muscles to his fortitude to his brain. Every part except his heart.

Here’s what others say about it:

4.8 Rating

“KaLyn Cooper does it again! the story line was sweet featuring a charming toddler named Addison you can’t help but fall in love with, along with a wonderful moving romance between her mom, Jillian, and her tough, hunky ex SEAL uncle, Jack.” Donna S. *****

“I was given this book in exchange for an honest review. And honestly, it was a great read.” Susan *****

snorkeling-cancun“Beautiful locations and the search for lost treasure make up this romantic suspense between two unlikely people. Jack Girard and his family have a long history of treasure hunting in Cancun. I liked how the author blended both the more ancient traditions of their Mayan ancestry along with current day traditions.” Cindy O. ****

“I absolutely loved this book! If I could give the book 10 stars I would because it was that good! I highly recommend this book as well as Ms. Cooper’s first book “Explosive Combination” and I can’t wait for the next book. She has become my new go-to author for military romance (and hot love scenes) You won’t regret getting this book. ” Teresa J. *****

Tami Lund & Eminem, They’re Tight *In Her Mind*

Maybe I should clarify that title. I’m actually referring to the character Eminem played in the movie 8 Mile. Jimmy “B-Rabbit” Smith. Remember him? He was the poor white kid from Detroit who was going nowhere fast, despite his dreams of becoming a famous rapper.

So how are we so tight? Well, we have a few things in common. Okay, maybe only a very, very few things. Maybe two.

First, we both came from poor, single-parent households in Detroit. Okay, okay, in Michigan. I was actually raised in mid-Michigan, although it was an ethnically mixed, solidly blue-collar, factory town. And I lived in a trailer park for a minute when I was in sixth grade.

But I live in Detroit now. Okay, okay, in the ‘burbs. My version of Detroit involves the DIA, the Riverfront, The Whitney, the Renaissance Center, Eastern Market, Fox Theatre, Ford Field, and Tigers Stadium (okay, Comerica Park, but I’m plenty old enough to remember games at Tigers Stadium — not to mention Joe Lewis Arena, which isn’t going away like Tigers Stadium did, but it’s the last season the Red Wings will play there). How about Belle Isle, Hitsville USA, and the casinos? Oh, and Greektown and Mexicantown. Speaking of awesome restaurants, how about Roast, Punch Bowl Social, The Rathskeller? The list goes on, much like the beat…

Wait, I’ve completely digressed from the purpose of this post. I was trying to show you the connection I feel with Jimmy Smith from 8 Mile. It’s more than just our poor roots and undoubtedly shared favorable opinions about all those cool places in Detroit. (For the record, I have no idea if Jimmy, or Eminem for that matter, like any of those places I noted; I’m making a biased assumption based on the fact we all live in the Detroit area and take a bit of pride in our hometown.)

Anyway, what really helps me feel connected to Jimmy is … that award I won on October 8th, for my book, UNDERCOVER HEAT!!!

14590407_10154677516611579_4721134322497278793_n

undercover-heat_cover

**Author pitch here: It’s a super awesome book about two broken people who are forced to figure out how to get along and then end up growing as individuals and having super steamy sex. Many times. So it’s practically the perfect romance novel. Just sayin’. **

Never have I felt so connected to Jimmy Smith as I did on the Monday after winning that Rone Award at the InD’Scribe Conference. (Read my funny blog post about what it was like to be a first time award winner here.)

We both, ultimately, won the award, reached the pinnacle… And then went back to work afterward. Work, as in the job that paid the bills, the one that had nothing whatsoever to do with those dreams floating around in our heads.

On that Monday morning, as I sat in my car, creeping my way through rush hour traffic, all I could think about was that scene in 8 Mile, when Jimmy wins (oops, spoiler alert!) and everybody’s celebrating, and for a minute, he’s king of the world….

And then the DJ tries to convince him to stay, to be a host at the club, and Jimmy says nah, I gotta get back to work. Not only does he need to continue to earn a steady paycheck, but he had asked a friend to cover his shift for him, and he couldn’t let that guy down, either. So altruistic, so brave, so deserving of that award. And someday, so big, so successful; finally breaking free of that poor, sometimes seemingly hopeless life.

Okay, we don’t quite yet have that in common. I mean, sure, I’ve moved beyond my poor roots, without a doubt, but I’m no Eminem.

Maybe someday.

Until then, I’ll smile every time I walk past that award on display in my dining room (deliberately, I might add), I’ll giggle every time my husband manages to work it into yet another seemingly unrelated conversation, and I’ll keep writing. And dreaming. Big dreams. Huge dreams.

I’m ready to lose myself.

She’s not what she seems. Neither is he. But the terrorist threat is real. So is the desire that smolders between them.

Jonathan came to Dallas for a fresh start, but you can’t run from your past, or the man in the mirror. He finds new hope in the waitress at his favorite diner.

After two tours in Afghanistan, nursing no longer appeals to  Gwen, and running her Uncle’s diner is only a stop-gap measure. When she overhears a conversation threatening Americans with terrorism, she’s not sure who to trust because nothing is what is seems in Smoke & Mirrors.

If you like sexy, military drama like Paige Tyler’s SEALs of Coronado series you’ll love Smoke & Mirrors.

….oh, of course there will be Diamonds release week! Want to see what I’ll be giving away? Sneak peek over at the “Official Cover Reveal”.

Shooting Bear – A Puppy Tale

KaLyn and Little Bear2 fav

We finally had success.

This past Sunday, I meticulously curled my hair and actually put on makeup for the first time in over a month.  Don’t judge me, it was Day 25, post hip replacement surgery. I felt prepared for my photo shoot….with Little Bear.

2016-08-21 13.48.54That day I changed his name to Little Bastard. He had found the only mud puddle in our yard, by creating one all by himself. He was so proud as he splashed and played “Can’t Catch Me” with Favorite (only) Son.

Once cleaned up, Macho Marine decided we should take the pictures in my favorite spot, my porch swing. That worked for me since I needed to sit due to the surgery.

SIDE BAR: I have discovered that controlling 65 pounds of muscle with the ADHD brain of an unrepentant child, is nearly impossible. Oh, you want me to sit here? Where? Here? Or over here? Shiny object! And he bolts until he reaches the end of his leash, jerking me to my core. Reminder: I’m Day 25 so my core isn’t what I consider stable and strong, yet.

So I sat down on the swing, and MM wrangled Little Bear onto it beside me.

He didn’t fit. His butt fell off.

More lifting, maneuvering, and repositioning. We put his head in my lap and decided that would have to work.

At this point I decided the black slacks were a poor choice on my part since Little Bear was shedding.

2016-08-21 15.01.31As I wiggled to get comfortable, the swing moved.

Did I mention that Little Bear gets car sick? Yep. About the time I heard his stomach gurgle, I warned MM to hurry up.

Needless to say, none of those pictures worked. It might have been operator error, though, but I learned many years ago you don’t mention such things to your spouse, who is doing you a favor.

Little Bear not wanting to look at Macho Marine and the camera

Several Ginger Snaps later, we moved the photo shoot from hell inside. In case you didn’t know, the cookies help settle a dog’s stomach….and the sugar improved MM’s mood because he likes them too.

Seated in a century-old rocker given to MM’s grandparents as a wedding gift, in front of the fireplace MM and Favorite Son built last fall, we finally got Little Bear to cooperate for one, mind you just 1, good picture, out of more than two dozen.

The picture will be used as part of a national campaign promoting Dog Tags for Christmas. Noel’s Puppy Power is my contribution to the anthology with Lindsay McKenna and J.M. Madden.
