From Kindle Worlds, republished!

You might remember that last year, Amazon shut down the Kindle Worlds program they had. I was so disappointed when they did that. If you don’t remember what it was, you can read about it here.

At any rate, anyone publishing in Kindle Worlds last year received an email that they were closing down and our books would be taken down and couldn’t be sold as Kindle Worlds books any more.

I wrote in the Mary O’Reilly Paranormal Mysteries World. The series is written by my friend Terri Reid. Once Kindle Worlds was over, she was gracious enough to give us permission to go ahead and republish the books out from under the Kindle World umbrella.

Now, I could have done this last year, immediately after Kindle Worlds closed down. I could have. But did I? NOPE…life gets in the way. Work, grandchildren, going back to school, the desire to have free time; they all got in the way of me republishing my titles.

However, I found some time a few weeks ago and have republished both Grave Injury and Trouble Lake.

Touch my Nook

ID-100101426

pic: tablet pc & book, adamr, freedigitalphotos.net

It was a Christmas present, my new Nook. I found out later that the very child I had made fun of for going out shopping on Black Friday had, in fact, waited in line for a very long, long time at a local store to buy a Nook for her mommy, at a very, very good price.

All that and a gift card to fill it! And didn’t I feel like a horse’s ass for teasing?

I immediately mess with it, in the process downloading what I found out later was a very naughty book veiled as a romance novel. It amounted to poorly written erotica. I read skimmed it and wished for a red pen the entire time. Don’t these people even edit? Or attend church?

I figured out how to find the good books, the really good books, and managed to blow through my gift card in under seven minutes. I also had several books pop up in my library that I didn’t order. In chatting with a friend later, I discovered that she too had a couple show up in her Nook, uninvited, right around the time she had gone into (rhymes with Smarms & Coble) where there is Wi-Fi, as opposed to her home, which is Wi-Fi-lacking.

She went back in to Smarms & Coble to find out why these books were downloaded into her library and wouldn’t you know it, those books were gone. Missing. She was unable to find them anywhere in her Nook and hadn’t pushed any buttons to remove them. Now, my friend is not a stupid person and has not begun seeing things that aren’t there. Yet.

However, the skeevy bookstore employee obviously decided to have a little fun with her.

Friend: Hi, I’ve only downloaded two books to my Nook, and I was just wondering why books I didn’t buy are being downloaded to my Nook? (hands over Nook)

Bookstore: (scrolls through her Nook library.) You must have downloaded them. Or someone lent them to you. But I only see two books in here.

Friend: (grabs Nook back, pages through) What the…They were just there!!!

Bookstore: (shrugs) Well, they’re not there now. Next customer in line?

Friend: Now, wait just a damn minute. I can barely download books I want. What makes you think I can lend books?

Bookstore: If they were ever even there (smirking) I’m thinking maybe that’s exactly what you did; you lent them to someone. You can do that, you know, lend your Nook library to someone. It’s in the directions. That’s probably what you did.

Friend: (voice is rising a little bit) I didn’t lend them to anyone! I just got this thing, and I can’t work it; what makes you think that I am so technologically gifted that suddenly I learned how to share my library with someone?

Bookstore: I’m just saying you probably touched your Nook to someone else’s. Did you touch Nooks?

Friend: (gasps) I’ve never, even seen another person’s Nook, much less touch them together or let someone touch mine! I’m not that kind of person!

Bookstore: You had to have touched Nooks with someone. It’s okay; we all are curious as to what other people’s Nooks look like. It’s human nature. Some people cover their Nooks with special decorations and some people just let them be au natural. (Giggles)

Friend: (quietly, defeated) Mine has a light on it so I can use it in bed.

Bookstore: Oh, a party girl, huh?

Because I was laughing so hard as she related that story to me, I hardly heard anything past “touching Nooks together.”

Wait…I think I already downloaded that book.

The Problem with Puppies

Noel's Puppy PowerAs I write Noel’s Puppy Power, the antics of my own 7-month-old puppy, Little Bear, continue to appear.

2016-04-12 12.18.19

When Little Bear was about three months old, he and I visited the Granddoll and Favorite (only) Daughter. He destroyed the carpet in the guest bedroom.

2016-07-01 21.21.44We needed to go to Florida when Little Bear was six months old  so I discussed his carsickness problem with the vet. He gave us magic pills.  Or, maybe it was the fact we took the motorhome. I don’t care, he didn’t get sick and rode like a champ.

I personally love the weather in East Tennessee. It’s been in the 90’s lately so Bear prefers to spend his days inside with me while I write, face over top the register enjoying the air conditioning. The other day I heard a clunk. Then a clink. Followed by Little Bear’s clanking dog tags…but the sound wasn’t quite right. I found him in the bathroom, pawing at the floor register which was stuck on his dog tags, hanging around his neck like a huge prize.

Now that I’ve shared some of my dog stories, please COMMENT below with your puppy stories.

Noel’s Puppy Power by KaLyn Cooper

Tanner Hill is better at communicating with animals than women. That might be why he hasn’t had a second date in over two years. He’s also been extremely busy with his kennel that has become the premier training facility, specializing in supplying dogs to veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Then again, there is this psychologist he can’t get out of his head, or his heart.

Dr. Bailey Conrad would never allow the loss of half her right leg to an IED in Iraq to stop her. Every day at the VA hospital, she sees patients who have lost so much more to the war effort. It’s her goal in life to help as many vets as possible to find a ‘new normal’, because she knows firsthand, it’s the internal scars that can be the most difficult to heal.

SEAL’s Christmas Dream by J.M. Madden

The trail leads to a notorious Pit-Bull fighting ring. It may take a Christmas miracle and a helpful nudge from an old partner to get everyone home safely.

Giveaway Tuesday! by Annie Anthony

Oh, friends.  Friends. 2016 is flying by faster than that last hour before daylight savings time. (C’mon, admit there is at least one clock in your house/car/office you haven’t yet sprung ahead! I admit to one…)

I’ve been working double time, literally, editing and professional money-making far more often than I’ve been writing, and what feels like 25 hours a day (extra hour provided courtesy of that one pesky clock I haven’t adjusted yet…)  I’ve been plotting and scheming and starting the next chapters of my lesbian zombie work in progress, but I really need to come up with a real working title.  Anything I end up trying sounds like a very sad play on words… LZ WIP? (Lesbian Zombie Work In Progress? Yeah, you feel my pain.)

I had four releases out in 2015 and so far in 2016, I’ve released little more than the button on my pants… all this sitting in one place editing is hell on the waistline. So since I don’t have lots of new-news to scream to the hilltops about, let’s rally some excitement about  some old-ish news. And what could be more exciting than a GIVEAWAY?! (Twirl!)

Getting Dirty with Rosanna Leo

hrpredatorsrescueThanks so much to the ladies of Love, Lust and Laptops! I am thrilled to be here in my former stomping ground. KaLyn was kind enough to invite me to visit and share the latest on my new paranormal romance release:

          Predator’s Rescue

          Gemini Island Shifters 7

This book continues in the same vein as my other shape shifter books but in one way, it’s a little different. Things get dirty in this one.

Now keep your pants on, you naughty monkeys. Of course, we do get “dirty” between the sheets, but the characters are living a little closer to the edge in this one. We see grit and grime and even a little bit of fish slop. Seriously, at one point my heroine Fleur gets covered in fish slop. (You will have to read the book for more info on that part. There’s no way I’m giving that scene away.)

The characters get dirty in other ways, too. There are references to some serious drug use in this book. In fact, Fleur’s mother Barbi is an addict and she is addicted to a dangerous shape shifter drug called “Spider.” I give the reader a glimpse into Barbi’s world and it isn’t pretty.

In the interests of full disclosure, I will also admit my hero Jani may encounter some grimy moments of his own, but again, you’ll need to read the book. If I mentioned the situation here, you’d think I’d lost my mind.

Why dwell on such unpleasant details? Life isn’t always pretty and packaged in a bow. Sometimes it’s messy. Although I write paranormal romances, I think it’s important they feel real. Both my hero and heroine are dealing with some huge emotional issues. To me, dirt symbolizes the confusion in their hearts. They need to shed old hurts and stains so they can emerge fresh and clean. Their love allows them to do this.

I hope you’ll read Predator’s Rescue and get dirty with me.

Blurb:

Tiger shifter Jani Fodor should have washed his hands of Fleur Bissette long ago. However, when she disappears from the shape shifter sanctuary on Gemini Island, he can’t forget her, and launches a fraught two-week search to find her. He thinks she’ll be grateful but the petulant she-wolf resents his intrusion in her life.

Jani recently liberated Fleur from a vicious cult of shape shifters, where she was brainwashed by the sadistic August Crane. The wolf shifter terrorized their friends at the Ursa Fishing Lodge and Resort on Gemini Island. Labeled a “bad girl” all her life, Fleur knows she’ll never fit in with the good guys at the Ursa, no matter how much Jani tries to convince her of their regard. Besides, she can’t stay with Jani. Although he’s the closest thing she’s ever had to a friend, their chemistry is explosive in the worst way.

When a new menace arises, in the form of a vicious drug dealer with a grudge, Jani is adamant Fleur accept his help to rehabilitate her addict mother and remove her from the influence of her dealer. Fleur accepts Jani’s assistance but as they work together, friendship erupts into passion. Neither can deny their lust-struck spirit animals and before long, they realize their connection runs deeper than they ever expected.

Despite the threats posed by the drug dealer, the worst danger of all dwells inside Fleur. Haunted by the spirit of August Crane, Fleur is inundated by visions that torment her. She is consumed by guilt and plagued by old hostilities. Can this bad girl make good? And is Jani’s love enough to save her from her demons?

Excerpt:

Once again, Jani’s temper flared but he swallowed his simmering rage. He stood and raised his voice so he could be heard over Loretta Lynn’s tinny warbling as it emanated from the jukebox. “Now I’m going to ask everyone in this shithole one more time. I’m looking for Fleur Bissette. Where is she?”

There was a crash and a feminine cry from behind one of the closed doors. Jani didn’t hesitate. He launched himself off his stool and toward the door, already on the verge of shifting. His tiger hairs danced in anticipation under his skin, ready to burst through his pores.

The two men who’d approached him grabbed him by the shoulders and hauled him back.

“Hey, asshole,” the grizzly man shouted. “You’re not allowed back there. Private parties only.”

Jani glanced at the hand on his shoulder and then at the man. “One warning. Take your hands off me.”

The idiot snorted and looked at his pal. “Why waste your time lookin’ for Fleur anyway? That girl’s nothing but trouble. Trouble loves her. In fact, she’s probably spreading her legs to trouble right now.”

Jani reached for the man’s arms and spun him around. “What did you say?”

“It’s all the bitch knows how to do. That’s all women like her are good for anyway.”

Jani reared back and let his fist fly, cracking it against the man’s face. The grizzly shifter flew across the room, hitting the back wall, collapsing to the floor. The grim satisfaction of seeing the man crumple overrode any pain in his knuckles. In fact, it felt so good to hit the jackass he had to hold his hand behind his back so he wouldn’t hit him again.

No one, no one, insulted Fleur. The man was lucky Jani didn’t kill him for the slight. Fleur had been called too many names in her time, and he’d made it his mission to see she was never belittled again.

Jani nodded toward the other men. “Don’t even think of stopping me.”

He tried the closed door, relieved to find it unlocked. He flung the door open and his tiger senses homed in on her immediately.

Fleur had clearly been serving drinks to the small group of shifter bikers inside, but one of them had gotten a little too close to the new waitress. Her tray of drinks lay on the floor, smashed, and one of the men had her over his lap. His large hand caressed her ass as she squirmed in his grip.

As time seemed to freeze for Jani, Fleur turned to glance at him. She mouthed his name.

The silent plea made his heart twist in his chest. Had she actually spoken aloud? He wasn’t sure. He couldn’t hear her voice. His ears were ringing too much as his tiger roared her name.

Her dark eyes seemed to grow darker, black with emotion, but he didn’t take time to analyze the sentiment flitting behind her irises.

With a noise that must have sounded more animal than man, Jani raced toward her and pulled her off the man’s lap. He moved her toward the door, so she wouldn’t be hurt in the melee. He then turned to the shithead who’d grabbed her, a growl emanating from his furious core.

The biker, startled and likely drunk, didn’t react quickly enough to shift. Jani hauled him off his chair and thrust him toward the wall.

“Jani,” Fleur called, her voice loud and clear now. “Don’t. You don’t know what you’re doing.”

“His hand was on your ass. I know enough.”

One of the other men was foolhardy enough to try to stop him. He tried to yank Jani away but Jani snapped his arm back, using his elbow to hammer the man in the face. Cradling his bloody nose, the man retreated.

Jani turned his attention back to the shifter who’d groped Fleur. “That was the last time you ever touch her.” Bracing himself, he head-butted him. A sickening crack sounded in the room. The man moaned, his eyes rolled back, and he dropped to the floor.

Ignoring the pain exploding through his forehead, Jani marched toward Fleur, picked her up, and hauled her over his shoulder.

“Hey. Put me down! You have no right.”

No right. He might have laughed if he wasn’t concerned about getting her out of there in one piece.

Holding out his free arm to warn off any others who might consider having a go at him, Jani carried the writhing Fleur out of the room and out of the bar. His heart thumped against his chest just from holding her. Granted, he hadn’t quite envisioned holding her like this, her ass high in the air near his face, but it pleased him more than he cared to admit out loud. Something about the scenario made his inner caveman very happy.

Hot SEALs Kindle World Tour

I’m so excited to be part of this Hot SEALs Blog Tour!!  Check out all the books recently released with my Claimed by a SEAL (Cancun/Hot SEALs Crossover).

And the best news is that each book is ONLY $1.99!!!

Never heard of Kindle Worlds? It’s a special place where famous authors – like New York Times Best Seller Cat Johnson – invite other authors to write a story blending the Cat Johnson characters you love with characters from books written by your other favorite authors. Cat Johnson has more information about the Kindle World on her website, and there is also FAQ’s section.

About the Hot SEALs Kindle World

With years of dedication to the Navy, SEAL Jon Rudnick and his teammates have confirmed one thing – they are not afraid to risk life and limb for their country. But when navigating military red tape begins to present more challenges than the enemy, this band of combat-hardened veterans is divided. While some remain serving on Active Duty, others take their drive, skills, and expertise to the private sector, where they form GAPS (Guardian Angel Protection Services). In these roles, will the SEALs fight for the women they love with the same vigor they use to seek out enemy threats? Which battlefield will they face next?

Claimed by a SEAL by KaLyn Cooper

Claimed cover w KW logoThree years ago, Stacie Vandercoy was stuck undercover in Iraq for six months with Jeff “Rock Star” Lennon, the arrogant SEAL who thought he was God’s gift to women. But he couldn’t have her. Fraternization is against the rules. And still is as they infiltrate home-grown terrorism in Norfolk, Virginia. Can she continue to resist him? Does she have to?

Jeff Lennon had been forced to do things he didn’t like as a Navy SEAL, and now as an agent for the terrorist division of Homeland Security’s Border Patrol. For years, his only real regret has been what he couldn’t to do to Stacie back in Iraq. He’s been given another chance to claim her heart, body and soul. In the meantime, they have to stop a terrorist attack somewhere in the Norfolk area, during Fleet Week.

Even the agency’s psychologist isn’t sure Stacie can pull off pretending to be Jeff’s wife. What lengths will Stacie and Jeff go to assure the mission’s success? And what will they both lose in the process?

My SEAL Bodyguard by Paige Tyler

She writes about danger for a living and now she find herself in it. Only a Navy SEAL can save her.

When someone breaks into romance author Peyton Matthews’ Virginia Beach home to steal her newest manuscript, her publisher hires Noah Chase, a former Navy SEAL and the newest member of GAPS to be her bodyguard.

Peyton thinks the idea of needing a bodyguard is ridiculous, but she can’t help appreciating how gorgeous Noah is. And while she thought that having a stranger hanging around 24/7 would mess with her creativity, the Navy SEAL definitely comes in handy when she’s choreographing fight scenes. All that hand-to-hand action and rolling around on the floor with him gets her pulse racing, but while Noah is falling for Peyton too, he doesn’t act on it. He needs to keep his head in the game and focus on the job or he could end up getting her killed. She might not think she’s in danger, but his gut tells him differently.

The threat to Peyton is closer to home than she realizes however, and it will take all of Noah’s SEAL training to save her life.

Shamed by her behavior toward the woman rescued alongside her, and further embarrassed and guilt-racked over the way she treated the SEALs who risked their lives on her behalf, Julie is desperate to make amends.

With help from Missy Greenwood, a D.C. acquaintance who’d endured her own harrowing experience, Julie connects with Patrick Hurt, Commander of the SEALs who’d saved her life. If she can prove she’s not the same person who mistreated his team, he’ll grant her request to meet them—but not before the protective, sexy man makes a surprising request of his own.

**Protecting Julie is a Kindle World crossover novella with the SEAL of Protection Series and Cat Johnson’s Hot SEALs Series. It can be read as a stand-alone, but we recommended reading the other books in the SEAL of Protection Series in order to get maximum enjoyment.

 Darwin’s Evolution by Siobhan Muir

Sometimes retirement is a helluva lot of work…

Retired Marine Master Sergeant Sadie Hawkins is ready for a quiet life with her mother in northern Arizona. No more recon, no more shots fired. Hell, she might even give romance a try if she finds the right guy. Like the one asleep on her shoulder on the train.

Cyrus “Darwin” Finch retired from the Navy SEALs and now runs Ultimate Recon, a security, surveillance, and rescue company employing retired members of the four branches of the U.S. military. He’s on “forced” vacation and is supposed to relaxing, dammit. Until he meets Sadie.

When they discover a foreign enemy setting up a domestic retreat in Sadie’s backyard, romance and vacations take a backseat. There are no calm seas or clear skies with bullets flying, and no time for a Happy Ever After. But SEALs never give up and Marines never surrender.

Surrender to a SEAL by Normandie Alleman

Recently retired Navy SEAL Luke Paulson feels strangely comfortable in a war zone—it’s adjusting to the real world and all its challenges where he falls short. When his sister becomes ill and his mother’s Alzheimer’s care lands solely on his shoulders, Luke needs cash. Protecting an international law student who is as intelligent as she is beautiful seems the perfect fit.

In Washington, D.C., Chief Justice Thornhill is being threatened by a domestic terrorist group, and his granddaughter Charlotte is their target. Initially she seems none-too-pleased with her new bodyguard shadowing her every move, but a night on the town with a few too many cocktails quickly changes the way she views the sexy SEAL.

But when Luke deceives her to get the upper hand, he realizes too late he’s risked losing it all, including the girl who has turned his life upside down by stealing his heart. His toughest mission yet may be convincing her to trust him again.

KaLyn Cooper

KaLyn Cooper’s romances blend fact and fiction with blazing heat and heart-pounding suspense.

Twenty-two years as a military wife has shown KaLyn the world, and thirty years in PR taught her that fact can be stranger than fiction. She leaves it up to the reader to separate truth from imagination.

She, her husband, and bird dog live in Eastern Tennessee on a micro-plantation filled with gardens, cattle, and quail. When she’s not writing, she’s at the shooting range or paddling on the river.

I still read over 100 books a year, mostly audio books, and write every day.

Maryann Jordan

I have always been an avid reader. I joke that I “cut my romance teeth” on the old bodice ripper romance books. Last year I started a blog to showcase wonderful writers. In 2014, I finally gave in to the characters in my head pleading for their story to be told. Thus, Emma’s Home was created.

I work as a counselor in a high school and have been involved in education for the past 30 years.  I have been married to a wonderfully patient man for 32 years and have 2 adult, very supportive daughters.  When writing, my dog or one of my cats will usually be found in my lap!

Marissa Dobson

Born and raised in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area, Marissa Dobson now resides about an hour from Washington, D.C. She’s a lady who likes to keep busy, and is always busy doing something. With two different college degrees, she believes you are never done learning.

Being the first daughter to an avid reader, this gave her the advantage of learning to read at a young age. Since learning to read she has always had her nose in a book. It wasn’t until she was a teenager that she started writing down the stories she came up with.

Marissa is blessed with a wonderful supportive husband, Thomas. He’s her other half and allows her to stay home and pursue her writing. He puts up with all her quirks and listens to her brainstorm in the middle of the night.

Her writing buddy Cameron (a cocker spaniel) is always around to listen to her bounce ideas off him. He might not be able to answer, but he’s helpful in their own ways.

Donna Michaels

It’s all my mother’s fault.

She read to me before I could read and opened up that magical world where I still reside today. Then came television and movies. Now I had three avenues that fed my imagination…and boy could I eat! As you no doubt figured out, this lead to my writing career. I’m a NY Times, USA Today, and Amazon Bestselling Award winning author. Phew, that was a mouthful! Multi-published in e-book and print with several publishers, I certainly have a ton of voices in my head.

I’m happily married to a military man for 28 years. We have four children and several rescued cats. Michael’s been in the Army National Guard since before he graduated. The Guard has been a part of our lives right from the start. It was only natural for the military to spill into my writing. God bless the military and their families. Thank you all for your sacrifices.

You already know my mom inspired my love of reading, but it was my dad who got me hooked on movies. Even now, if I had the time, I could happily go from one movie to another all day long. They are the reason I love mixed genre and why I can’t just stick to just one in my writing, although, as you can tell, I have a soft spot for cowboys and the military.

Well, that’s about it. Thanks for getting to know me a little better. Remember, keep reading to your children. The journey you’re igniting is precious. And the next time you’re at the movies, turn around. I just might be the person sitting behind you. No, not the one throwing popcorn (it’s too expensive to waste). I’m the one already imagining the sequel.

Have a great day and thanks for reading!

WIP Weekend

We thought we’d bring you up to date on what we Ladies of Love, Lust and Laptops have been up to lately.

Emily Mancini writing as Marci Boudreaux is re-releasing Unforgettable You

cover_300When life throws a widowed innkeeper and a world-famous movie star together they share an unexpected romance. But is their love strong enough to survive their real lives?

Desperate to keep her ailing mother-in-law, Doreen, in the woman’s home, Carrie Gable agrees to board a handful of Hollywood’s most elite actors at the manor. Despite her resentment of the demands being placed upon her, she can’t help but be taken in by actor Will Walker.

Will, in a last-ditch effort to save his career, has agreed to a project he has no interest in. The more time he spends with his egotistical co-stars, the more drawn he is to Carrie. Long nights spent talking about the paths their lives have taken make him realize he’d rather have a simpler life, but his ties to L.A. aren’t as willing to let him go.

With the temptation of stardom pulling Will in one direction and the need to care for Doreen tugging Carrie in another, the couple struggle to hold onto the happiness they were missing until finding each other.

Sara Daniel – Sneak peek at The Bad Boy’s Gift by Sara Daniel   Coming March 29, 2016

His gift is the only thing left from the love they shared…and she plans to sell it.

The bad boy of Regret Hollow had received an engraved invitation to return to town. Zane DeMonde smirked and flicked the card in the trash.

“Did you actually read the invitation?” Ken Hawkins demanded, striding toward the discarded paper.

“I don’t need to,” he assured his business manager. “Those people don’t warrant a reply. After sending me out with a boot to the ass, no matter how much they kiss my ass now, they won’t convince me to give them the time of day.”

“That’s an interesting ass fixation you have.” Ken grinned. “I’ll have to hint at it when you release your new painting and see if the critics can divine where it comes into play.”

Zane snorted, relieved for the distraction from the place he could never exorcise from his mind. “Speaking of which, have you planned a debut for the new pieces yet?”

“I’m waiting for the buzz about this auction of your early work to reach its peak. Then I’m going to book a top venue and capitalize on the momentum.”

“What auction? What early work?”

“If you bothered to read your mail, maybe you’d know.” Ken retrieved the invitation from the trash and slapped it on the desktop. “Four original pieces from a private collection that have never been on public display are going on sale. The woman in charge won’t give any details about them until the day of the sale.”

“Sounds like fraud to me. No one in town would want anything of mine, even if they could afford it.”

“If you really think it could be fraud, we better be damn sure before we start pointing fingers. The woman running the event is Julianne Truman. Ring any bells?”

Zane froze. Her name rang all his bells.

KaLyn Cooper – Just released 2 books. Click on the cover of Claimed by a SEAL to read the first chapter.

Tami Lund – I’m currently working on the fifth book in the Lightbearer series.
BTW, the prequel, First Light, is FREE for a limited time, if you haven’t yet started the series! Click HERE for your FREE copy.
So far in this series, we’ve focused on shapeshifters and those curious magical creatures called Lightbearers, with their renewable magic the shifters want so badly. In the next book, however, I’m introducing a new being – Cupids. Nope, they aren’t chubby little diaper-clad babies with wings and bows and arrows. According to the Cupid in my story, they don’t even start Cupid school until they are fifteen, and most have lousy aim. So forget your stereotypes, and take a look at this introduction to Cupids:

“I like my women with straight hair and kinky personalities.”

Adora blinked, but managed to keep her expression bland, her stature stiff.  The man lying on the couch across from her turned his head and admired her legs.

“Long legs, too.  I like long legs.”

Adora uncrossed her legs and tugged at the hem of her pale blue skirt.  This entire setup felt like some sort of counseling session. She wasn’t a counselor, she was a Cupid.

“Yes, well, I will take those requirements into—”

“Type of being isn’t so important.  I mean, look at me.  I’m a classic mutt.  I don’t have any right being choosy.  But if I could, I’d definitely choose a faery.  Now those are some seriously smokin’ females.”

Adora stared at the horns on his head, the warts on his face, the faint outline of undeveloped gills on his neck. He had never developed the ability to breathe underwater because, according to his dossier, he had an unnatural fear of large bodies of water. Judging by the smell radiating off him, Adora doubted he came into much contact with water at all, not even to bathe.

There isn’t a faery in any world who would have you.  Adora stood and smoothed the front of her dress, rolling the scroll she’d been pretending to write on, and with a flick of her wrist, caused the thing to disappear.

“Thank you for your time and your… insight,” she said tightly.  “I am sure someone will be in touch.”

The other being clamored to his feet and lunged across the small space, capturing one of her hands between both of his own.  “What about you?” he asked eagerly.  “Maybe you are the one.”  His gaze roved over her magenta, pixie cut hair, her large, almond shaped eyes, the small bit of cleavage he could see over the neckline of her dress. Adora used her free hand to rake a lock of hair out of her eyes and tried not to wrinkle her nose against the scent of putrid eggs.

“Hair’s a bit short, and now that you’re standing, I can see your legs are, too.  Still, I could make concessions.”

Adora wrenched her hand from his grasp and took a step away.  “I am not in the market for a mate.”

“Why not?” The man sounded genuinely perplexed.

“I am a Cupid.  My task is to find true love for others, not for myself.”

“Well that’s just stupid,” he spat.  “You’re the ones who profess true love to the rest of us.  Hell, I’ve always thought I just wanted to get laid once in a while.  Your kind are the ones who convinced me I should probably look for a mate, instead of just a good time.”  He shook his head, well and truly disgusted. “Now, I suggest you might be the one, and you blow me off.”

“It isn’t that I’m blowing you off, it’s that I cannot find true love or a mate.  That isn’t how it works.  Cupids do not fall in love.  We only help others seek it for themselves.  Now if you’ll excuse me…” Without waiting for a response, Adora pulled on her magic.  Nearly translucent wings sprouted from her back and began beating madly, faster and faster, until her feet lifted from the ground.

Thank You for My Lucky Numbers!

Captivated in Cancun medClaimed cover w KW logoNo, I didn’t win the lottery! But I feel like I did.

I had an extremely successful launch ofbooks this week and I want to thank those responsible for my success.

Thank you to my AWESOME readers! There were nearly 4,000 entries for the Double Down for Diamonds event.

Their purchases put me – for the first time ever – at #1 on an Amazon list:

Still on the numbers, I magically reached 4,000 Facebook Friends yesterday. Not long ago, I was stuck at less than 500. (Maybe I should go play the lottery.)

I want to thank Becky McGraw for introducing me to Cat Johnson who invited me to be part of her Hot SEALs Kindle World January launch.

And thank you to our own LL&L Emelia Mancini who is also my editor and turned BOTH my books around in record time so they could posted to meet my deadlines.

I wouldn’t even be an author if it weren’t for former LL&L blogger Monette Michaels.

I’ve blogged several times about how wonderful romance authors are and how I could never have made it this far, this fast, without the support of other authors.

Thank you!

What are you thankful today?

Message in a Bottle (or a Shoe Box) by Annie Anthony

What a difference a year makes. Last year at this time, Blue Suede Boi—the first short story I ever published—was being pulled from the virtual shelves. Why? My publisher closed its doors. Sad for all involved. And for me, it literally felt like a door closing on my publishing dreams. While I started 2015 with some shattered dreams and a story that I loved in digital bits and pieces, the experience prompted me to try something I never thought I’d have the guts to do: self-publishing. Now, I had two things most self-pubbed authors don’t have at least at first—amazing editing of my story and a fantastic cover artist/book designer.

So what came next was truly the hardest part: the faith. Which seems really fitting actually since Blue Suede Boi is a story about a girl who doesn’t really believe she can have what she wants. Kaia has a shoe store job to pay the bills but doesn’t have hope she’ll put her Masters degree to work in the stockroom.  She had a girlfriend, but she always felt as though she was playing dress up in someone else’s fantasy. She had a crush, but she didn’t think the woman even knew she was alive.

But as they say when one door closes, another opens.  And not just one door in my case.

After I self-pubbed Boi, I received published three more works, two of which were with publishers. Like the universe was sending me a message.  Keep the faith.  Keep writing.  Keep submitting.

My goals for 2016 are simple: Keep writing. Keep submitting. Keep the faith.

Like Kaia, you never know when the universe is about to send you a message. In Kaia’s case, the message came with a platinum blond Mohawk and wore blue suede shoes.

Here’s a little excerpt of Kaia’s story, Blue Suede Boi. Feel free to comment on the excerpt below or share some of your goals for the new year!

Blue Suede Boi

Amanda reached for a black leather chukka with neon green contrast stitching. One of my favorite fantasies sneaked into my head: Amanda on her back, me straddled over her with my ass in the air. I would lick and nibble the tight muscles of her middle, my nipples teasing against her firm stomach.

“Tell me why they don’t make shoes these cool for women?” she asked, as if I might really have insight on behalf of the shoe industry—me, a lowly clerk.

“I don’t think most women would wear a shoe that cool. But if they fit you, what does it matter who they were designed for?” I took the chukka from her hand, careful to just barely brush her fingers. My hand was already trembling a little, and I was probably sweating. “This one?”

“Yes, but I’d like to keep looking.”

“Sure. Do you want something in particular?”

“I have a date.” She dug her hands deep into the pockets of her worn skinny jeans. “So I need something really hot.”

“Oh.” I’m sure I didn’t hide my disappointment. A date. Of course, right. Amanda, the woman whose pheromones could turn straight girls gay from a distance of twenty miles—of course, a date. I dialed the intensity of my smile down a few more degrees. Shoes, focus on the shoes, not on Amanda’s nipples, which were hardening into peaks against the seams of what looked like a sports bra under her T-shirt. I swallowed. “Okay, then. Do you have an outfit you want to match the shoes with, or are you just looking around?”

“Yeah, I have an outfit.”

“What do you plan to wear?” Amanda’s white T-shirt was tissue thin, her tight grey jeans broken-in and well-worn. All boi. I gestured toward her, focusing my attention away from Amanda’s now fully erect nipples. “Something like what you have on now?”

“No, no, not this.” She tugged at the hem of her shirt. “I have some sweet tuxedo pants, and I was thinking a purple dress shirt or maybe a tuxedo vest with a tank top if it’s warm.”

“Tuxedo pants?” I imagined her long, slim legs in dress pants, her hair styled into spikes liked I’d seen her wear before. Even if she was shopping for a date with someone else, just thinking about her dressed up like she’d been when we first met made little tremors of arousal bank between my legs. “Okay, what color tuxedo pants? Just black?”

She smiled. “Actually no. This color. Kinda like what you’re wearing.”

I lifted the edge of my navy blue mini skirt toward her. “Like this?”

“Kinda, yeah.” She stepped closer and reached for the stretchy knit fabric of my skirt.

Amanda’s long fingers brushed the softest part of inner my thigh, her hand deliberately—deliberately—stroking me with a quick but firm touch.

“What do you think would go with this color blue?” she asked.

I suppressed a deep arousal-soaked breath. She was so close, I could have smelled the product in her hair—if I let myself. My pulse raced and I tried to ignore the whisper of her fingers at the hemline of my skirt. She could not be flirting with me, could she? Focus on the shoes.

I scanned the display. I felt dizzy. An electric warmth spread between her hand and my leg. Flirt?

I stood on the tips of my denim high tops, stretching to reach a pair of blue suede oxfords. “Do you like these?”

“Definitely. Can I try them?”

“Yeah, and the chukkas, too?”

She laughed, running a hand through that bleached panel of hair. “Is that what they’re called? Yeah, those too. Thanks, Kaia.”

I walked back to the stockroom, pausing to check my reflection in one of the security mirrors. Amanda. I couldn’t believe she remembered me. What were the odds that she would walk into my shoe store? Not really mine, of course. But was this just a coincidence? I finished my master’s degree nearly eight months ago and still hadn’t found a job. Well, a real job. I had worked this shoe gig all through grad school part-time. I tried to remember what she might have known about me, how she might have known where to find me.

I’d first met Amanda when I was dating Zen, and yes, that’s really her name. Zen was a lawyer, and she loved having me on her arm at parties but she sucked at anything more than lavish dates. Amanda worked at Zen’s law firm, doing something—IT maybe? I’d met Amanda at the firm’s holiday party. I was dolled up in an outfit Zen had picked out. I grimaced thinking about Zen. She had embarrassed me, trotting me out as eye candy. She called me her modern day Ann-Margret. I have natural red hair and a thing for thick wings of black eyeliner, sort of a retro glam vibe. I’m a redhead who likes wearing red, but I remember fidgeting in the strapless dress bought to match Zen’s burgundy shirt and holiday tie. The tacky bridesmaid-y dress, the coordinating colors…the whole scene was so not me. Zen and I lasted only about three months. The holiday party had been the last straw.

I’d been standing alone waiting for Zen to get drinks from the bar. Amanda and her date, a crazy-hot black girl dressed almost as flashy as I was, were the only other lesbian couple. I noticed them right away, the way Amanda’s hand hovered at the curve above her date’s ass, her brilliant-white mohawk a stark contrast to the businesslike haircuts of most of the partygoers. Amanda owned her swagger. She laughed and touched her date, tossing back drinks as though the firm event was just a pre-party warm up before a night of athletic and intense fucking.

I’d felt so jealous. Jealous as fuck. Zen was a confident butch, a half- Korean girl with a close-cut boy’s haircut and a stylish andro wardrobe. We talked, but we had zero chemistry. She was only interested in how I looked to other people. I let her take me out, pay for everything, hoping things might turn into more…but they never did. At that party, I felt sick watching the chemistry spark off Amanda and her date. I wanted to take home that gorgeous boi and fuck her senseless, grab that white-hot hair between my fingers and tug her face to my tits. I would never have anything close to that with Zen. That night, I knocked back too many glasses of wine and stared at Amanda from wherever Zen and I were—peering around the servers carrying cocktail snacks, running into Amanda in the ladies’ room. I’m sure I looked like a stalker, and I’d felt like the nerd at the high school dance with a lovesick crush on a popular athlete.

Zen had wanted to take me to her place after the holiday party. As she drove her sporty two-seater, she kept one hand under my dress, trying to stroke my pussy through my panties and teasing me when I didn’t get wet and encourage her.

“What’s up, baby?” She pulled her hand away and put both on the steering wheel. “Let’s go back to my place. I want you to sit on my face and come wearing that dress. You look so hot tonight, Kaia.”

I asked her to just take me home, told her I wasn’t feeling well. I hugged her before I went inside alone, knowing I would never see her again. I didn’t even feel like explaining. My heart sank and I felt alone and angry. Stupid candy-cane striped bow tie. Zen wasn’t a bad woman. She just wasn’t Amanda. I’d settled for Zen-relationships for too long. I wanted an Amanda of my own…that Amanda.

I got off that night, still wearing the bought-for-me red dress. I pushed my fingers deep inside my mouth, wetting them until they dripped. I rubbed my slick fingertips over my clit, arousal swelling my nub as I thought about how Amanda’s tongue would feel. I pictured her mohawk tickling my thighs as she licked me and imagined the feel of those spikes of sexy hair brushing against my chin as she sucked my nipples. I moaned so loud I probably woke my roommate, and a small squirt of come trickled down my fingers. I rolled over and grabbed my pillow for comfort, trying not to imagine what Amanda must have been doing with her date at that very moment.

Somehow, three months later, Amanda was in my shoe store. Shopping for a date, yes. But she’d remembered me. Maybe she had remembered the self-deprecating way I said where I worked and that I was a student when Zen had introduced us.

“I work at The Shoe Lot,” I’d joked. “Shoes at mall prices without the mall atmosphere.”

“Kaia is a graduate student,” Zen had said in a voice that suggested she expected Amanda to be impressed.

“School, school is great.” Amanda had shaken my hand. “And everybody needs shoes, right?”

“You know me, a closet full of fuck-me shoes,” Zoe, the date, had laughed.

Embarrassment and envy stampeded through my belly and rushed to my cheeks in a heady sprint. I felt lightheaded, conjuring a vision of Amanda and this sexpot tussling in the sheets…complete with fuck-me shoes.

“Classy, ladies. This is a work party.” Zen had shaken her head and grabbed my hand, towing me toward the managing partner and his wife.

The backsides of Zen’s and my coordinating holiday clothes could hardly have been a memorable introduction. Still, Amanda was here, shopping for shoes at my place of employment. For a few minutes, I had her attention. Whether she had a date with someone else or not, I smoothed my red hair and straightened out my side part. I grabbed sheer, pearly white lipstick from my purse and rolled just enough on my lips so they shined. Couldn’t hurt.

I quickly gathered her sizes and went back to the floor.

“Here.” She took the boxes from my arms.

“I don’t mind; it’s actually my job.” Chivalrous.

“Okay, but you’re not going to try to put the shoes on me, are you? That totally creeps me out.” She unlaced her perfectly worn-in oxfords.

“No, that’s fine. In fact, I have another customer I can check on. Try these on, and I’ll come back.”

An older woman asked for several styles of gel-sole walking shoes, so I ran back to the stockroom. After I delivered those, I checked on Amanda. She seemed to be thoroughly engaged, walking in front of the mirror and testing out the length of the toe.

“How are you doing?” I kneeled down, pulled the chukkas from the packing, and loosened the neon green laces. “How do those feel?”

“They feel amazing. What would you think about these with navy tuxedo pants?”

“Wow. These will be gorgeous, I think you’ll look great.” I imagined the shoes, on her feet, with the pants, and pressed my lips together. In my mind, I tugged the tuxedo pants from her hips.

“So what about you?” Amanda sat on the bench seat and handed me the blue suede oxfords, a really sharp pair with raw-cut black laces and black soles. She could have put the shoes on the floor or in the box, but she handed them to me. This time I didn’t avoid her touch.

Her grey eyes simmered with heat; her lashes were almost as pale as her long, sexy mohawk. She blinked as she held out the shoes.

“Me?” I took the shoes with one hand and boldly, with delight and desire tripping through my belly, let my fingers linger on hers.

“Yes, you. What are you gonna wear? Or do you want to surprise me when I pick you up?”

Jianne Carlo’s Hottest Christmas List for Satan!

banner3To celebrate our LLL giveaway, I’m choosing my characters from Satan, Hades Squad #5, Satan and Angel – their names couldn’t be more appropriate, right?

Satan and Angel hookup two days before Christmas and decide to spend the holiday together. Angel discovers from a mutual friend that Satan hates Christmas and begins to dread agreeing to sharing the day with him.

Here’s what happens when Angel arrives at Satan’s home:

Forty-five minutes later, Angel geared down to guide her recently rented Audi RS 7 onto the I-495 exit ramp. Snow started falling just as she reached the entrance to Satan’s long driveway.

To her surprise, he was leaning against his front door waiting for her.

She braked, switched off the engine, and unsnapped her seatbelt. He opened the door and without a second of hesitation she flew into his arms. God he smelled so mouth-watering.

He caught her chin, and they stared at each other. “Angel. It suits you.”

“Satan. It suits you.” She grinned at him. “It seemed too trite—you know Angel and Satan hooking up.”

“That all you have?” He inclined his head to the carry-on lying on the passenger seat.

“Well, I could’ve packed more, but I have this feeling that whatever I wear won’t be worn for long.”

“Smart woman.” He flicked the tip of her nose, twined their fingers together, reached across the driver’s seat, and grabbed her luggage.

“Hungry?” He opened the front door and ushered her in.

She glanced over her shoulder at him. “More munchy than hungry. Why?”

“Turn around. I have a surprise for you.”

“A surprise?” She frowned at him before whirling around.

Her jaw sagged. For there right in the curve of the grand staircase stood a gigantic Douglas Fir. The strap of her purse slipped down her arm to her wrist.

“Like it?” He stood behind her, his hands cupping her shoulders.

Tears brimmed, and she was too choked up for words, so she nodded. She covered his fingers with hers. “It’s beautiful, but Jess told me you hate Christmas and never celebrate the holidays.”

Angel pivoted, looked right at him, and toyed with the stubble darkening his chin. “I don’t want you to do anything you don’t want to.”

“Trust me. I don’t ever do anything I don’t want to. Thought it might be fun to decorate it and you. Have this vision of wrapping bows around strategic body parts and then un-wrapping them one by one.” He winked at her.

“Oh my. Wicked, wicked, Satan. That’s a perfectly delish idea. Do we start now?”
